Background: Automated flow cytometry-based urine analyzer is increasingly being used to identify and enumerate cells and particles in urine specimens. It measures electrical conductivity which could be transformed to osmolality. Using this machine, all urine specimens could be screened for osmolality without requiring a separate dedicated device.

Objective: Transplantations may require massive transfusion of blood products. Therefore, blood banks need to predict, prepare, and supply the required amount of blood products.

Methods: We measured the volume of transfused blood components as red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate in 54 and 89 patients who received heart and lung transplantation, respectively, in our hospital between January 2012 and December 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • High sensitivity flow cytometry (HS-FCM) was compared to conventional flow cytometry (C-FCM) for diagnosing paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) in patients with aplastic anemia (AA) or low-grade myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
  • In the study, HS-FCM showed lower sensitivity in detecting small PNH clones compared to C-FCM, especially in the AA/MDS group, where C-FCM identified more cases of PNH clones.
  • The findings suggest that while HS-FCM may reduce false positives in minor PNH clone detection, C-FCM remains superior for identifying these clones in affected patients.
