Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on nonalbuminuric renal insufficiency in Korean patients with type 2 diabetes and its link to cardiovascular disease (CVD) events.
  • Participants were analyzed based on their chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages, revealing differences in factors like diabetic duration and prior health conditions.
  • Findings suggest that nonalbuminuric CKD stage ≥3 shows a strong correlation with previous CVD events, and both decreased eGFR and increased albuminuria significantly raise the risk of such events.

Background: Increased serum ferritin and decreased vitamin D levels associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, their association with the severity of NAFLD has not been fully evaluated. The aim of this study was to compare the association of serum ferritin and 25(OH)D₃ levels with the severity of ultrasonographically detected NAFLD (US-NAFLD) and hepatic steatosis defined by fatty liver index (FLI) in Korean adults.

Subclinical Cushing syndrome (SCS) is a hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis abnormality characterized by autonomous cortisol secretion in patients with no typical signs or symptoms of Cushing syndrome. SCS patients may have adverse metabolic and cardiovascular effects due to slight, but continuous glucocorticoid secretion. Glucocorticoids also affect behavior, mood, neural activity, and a number of specific biochemical processes in the central nervous system.

Article Synopsis
  • ApoA-II, which is the second-most common apolipoprotein in HDL, has an unclear role in metabolic syndrome (MetS) and may have conflicting effects on cardiovascular health.
  • The study analyzed data from 244 Korean adults and found that while apoB levels were higher and apoA-I levels were lower in those with MetS, apoA-II levels showed no significant differences or associations with MetS.
  • Despite the lack of correlation, the study suggests that apoA-II could have both harmful and protective roles in cardiovascular health, differing from the clear associations seen with apoA-I and apoB.

Article Synopsis
  • A 61-year-old woman with an incidental adrenal mass was found to have elevated serum cortisol and disturbed circadian rhythm, leading to further testing for adrenal function.
  • After a dexamethasone suppression test caused severe hypertension and elevated catecholamines, she was diagnosed with pheochromocytoma, a type of adrenal tumor.
  • Following a successful laparoscopic adrenalectomy, her catecholamine levels normalized, and she has remained healthy without medication, highlighting the importance of investigating potential functional masses in adrenal incidentalomas.

Vascular calcification refers to the deposition of calcium phosphate in cardiovascular tissues, including arteries and myocardium. Vascular calcification is frequently associated with cardiovascular disease. Recently, bone morphgenetic protein-7 (BMP-7) has been proposed to play an inhibitory role in vascular calcification, but its inhibitory effect has not been fully elucidated.
