The approach for traditional uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (Uni-VATS) is typically located on the lateral chest wall, the resulting pain and visible scars may have a negative psychological impact on patients. We present our preliminary experience with the subcutaneous tunneled periareolar approach (STPA) in lung resection performed through Uni-VATS for treating pulmonary nodules. From December 2023 through to June 2024, five patients underwent this procedure, including three cases of the wedge resection, one case of the lobectomy, and one case of the segmentectomy.

Optical interferometry enables distance measurement with record-high precision. However, the conventional interference intensity shows fast spatial variations, limiting photodetection to a single spot. The light intensity at this spot is affected by various noises, restricting the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a coherent system.

Objectives: Acute alcohol intoxication is characterized as high morbidity and mortality. To explore new chemicals to relieve ethanol intoxication, we tried to explore the activators of catalase (CAT), an enzyme responsible for oxidization of ethanol into acetaldehyde to accelerate ethanol removal.

Methods: We identified zanamivir, an antiviral agent, activated CAT in vitro after screening of clinical chemicals.

As a newly developed technology, lignocellulose pretreatment of PHP (phosphoric acid coupled with hydrogen peroxide) can facilitate the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated lignocellulose for glucose production. It also has been found that the derived oxidative tail gas from pretreatment can facilely degrade organic pollutant. To balance the pollutant degradation and the glucose yield, the collaborative optimization on pretreatment was investigated.

We report a facile fractionation strategy using choline hydroxide (ChOH) based alkaline deep eutectic solvents (DES) for whole-component upgrading of bagasse. Through selective lignin and xylan dissolution, along with extensive biomass swelling, high-value lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCC, with high β-O-4 bond content of 68.9/100 Ar) and high-purity xylan were extracted without compromising cellulose recovery and hydrolysis.

The solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare intrathoracic neoplasm that commonly originates from the subpleural mesenchymal cells of the visceral pleura and accounts for less than 5% of all pleural tumors. We reported a case of a 54-year-old man with a two-week history of hypoglycemia, a six-month history of productive cough and fatigue, and chronic right chest pain. Radiological techniques revealed a giant intra-thoracic mass with hypervascularization, and pathological staining was carried out to make a definitive diagnosis of SFTP.

Article Synopsis
  • The study uses density functional theory (DFT) to examine how low oxygen vacancy formation energy affects the catalytic performance of chemical looping dry reforming of methane (CL-DRM) when metal ions Zn and Nd are co-substituted on CeO(111) surfaces.
  • Results show that the co-substituted surfaces have a very low oxygen vacancy formation energy (-2.05 eV), enhancing the CH conversion process compared to pristine surfaces, with the rate-limiting step being the dehydrogenation of CH.
  • However, while the co-substituted surfaces promote better reaction performance, high energy is required for syngas desorption and CO selectivity is reduced, indicating a balance is needed to prevent excessive

The high value-added utilization of agroforestry waste biomass is an urgent requirment. Herein, a feasible approach was provided to obtain biodegradable cellulose fibrous films from agroforestry waste biomass. The cellulose used was extracted from agroforestry waste biomass and then the cellulose fibrous film was obtained by direct electrospinning.

The conservation and sustainable development of traditional villages have raised global attention in the context of rapid urbanization and modernization. Taking 703 traditional villages in Hunan Province as an example, this study first constructed a Traditional Village Human Settlement Suitability (TVHSS) evaluation system based on the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) model. Then, the entropy weighting method was used to assess the spatiotemporal evolution of TVHSS from 2005 to 2020, while the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model was employed to analyze the influencing factors.

Background: Green and blue spaces, as crucial components of urban ecosystems, significantly impact the physical and mental health of residents. However, the mechanisms through which Green/Blue Space Justice influence residents' health remain unclear.

Methods: This study aims to explore the impact of green spaces on public psychological responses, physical activity, and mental health from a justice perspective, and to examine the moderating role of blue spaces in this relationship.

Article Synopsis
  • Caviar yield, color, and body weight are important traits in sturgeon breeding, and understanding their genetic basis is key for improvement.
  • The study sequenced the genomes of 673 Russian sturgeons, identifying around 10.41 million high-quality SNPs linked to these traits through a genome-wide association study.
  • By applying the GFBLUP method, the researchers improved the accuracy of predicting these traits, paving the way for better genetic selection in sturgeon breeding.

Background: There is a shortage of reliable predictive models to provide valuable prognostic information for early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) without lymph node metastasis (LNM). We aimed to develop and validate a nomogram using the prognostic factors in T1N0 ESCC patients.

Methods: Patients with pathological T1N0 ESCC who underwent esophagectomy between 2014 and 2021 at three institutes were reviewed.

Background: The lipid-lowering effects of Omega-3 fatty acids have been widely reported, yet their impact on ischemic stroke remains controversial. Reports on the protective effects of unsaturated fatty acids, such as Omega-6 and Omega-7, as well as saturated fatty acids in cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and ischemic stroke, are less frequent.

Objectives: This study aims to identify fatty acids associated with blood pressure and ischemic stroke through Mendelian randomization.

The dissolving pulp preparation from bleached kraft pulp while realizing the high-value application of hemicellulose fraction is of great significance for improving the overall economics of the process. This work proposed a two-step cascaded process of deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment combined with mechanical refining for the co-production of dissolving pulp and arabinoxylan (AX) from bleached bamboo pulp. Results showed that using alkaline DES composed of quaternary ammonium hydroxide and urea prepared high-quality dissolving pulp (α-cellulose content of 97.

Electrochemical formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) is a pivotal model for understanding organic fuel oxidation and advancing sustainable energy technologies. Here, we present mechanistic insights into a novel molecular-like iridium catalyst (Ir-N-C) for FAOR. Our studies reveal that isolated sites facilitate a preferential dehydrogenation pathway, circumventing catalyst poisoning and exhibiting high inherent activity.

Histone methylation is a key epigenetic modification that regulates the chromatin structure and gene expression for proper cellular and physiological processes. Aberrant histone methylation patterns are implicated in many diseases. Therefore, monitoring histone methylation dynamics in living cells and species is essential for elucidating its regulatory mechanisms and identifying potential therapeutic targets.

Gastric ulcer is a highly prevalent digestive tract disease across the world, which is recurrent and hard to cure, sometimes transforming into gastric cancer if left untreated, posing great threat to human health. To develop new medicines for gastric ulcer, we ran a series of screens with ethanol stress model in GES-1 cells, and we uncovered that lamivudine rescued cells from ethanol toxicity. Then, we confirmed this discovery using the well-established ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model in mice and our findings suggest that lamivudine can directly activate phosphoglycerate kinase 1 (PGK1, EC 2.
