Article Synopsis
  • - In 2011, the University of California, San Francisco introduced the CAPRA-S score for assessing prostate cancer progression after surgery, but prior comparisons with preoperative indicators were lacking.
  • - A study involving 130 patients who had radical prostatectomy between 2008 and 2013 validated the CAPRA-S score and found it outperformed the earlier CAPRA score in predicting 5-year progression-free survival.
  • - The CAPRA-S score demonstrated better predictive capabilities for both 3-year and 5-year progression-free survival rates and was deemed more suitable than the CAPRA score for guiding adjuvant therapy decisions.

Phosphatases of regenerating liver (PRLs) constitute a novel class of small, prenylated phosphatases with oncogenic activity. PRL-3 is particularly important in cancer metastasis and represents a potential therapeutic target. The flexibility of the WPD loop as well as the P-loop of protein tyrosine phosphatases is closely related to their catalytic activity.

Introduction: Positive surgical margin (PSM) has classically been associated with biochemical recurrence (BCR) following radical prostatectomy (RP) and immediate adjuvant radiotherapy has been advocated based on two large randomized prospective clinical studies. However, a significant percentage of patients with PSM never experience BCR. This study evaluated factors potentially affecting risk of BCR among the patients with PSM after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).

Article Synopsis
  • The increase in prostate cancer incidence and mortality in Korea is notable, particularly as native Koreans present with more advanced disease compared to American counterparts.
  • A study involving 1,159 males revealed that Koreans had higher mean preoperative PSA levels and Gleason scores than Americans, indicating a greater severity of disease at diagnosis.
  • The findings suggest that Korean patients may benefit from new prostate cancer treatment strategies due to their higher risk of malignant prostate cancers.

The key enzyme in the androgen synthesis and androgen receptor pathways is 5α-reductase (5-AR), which occurs as three isoenzymes. Types I and II 5-ARs the most important clinically, and two different 5-AR inhibitors (5-ARIs), finasteride and dutasteride, have been developed. Several urology associations have recommended and upgraded the use of 5-ARIs for an enlarged prostate with lower urinary tract symptoms.

Background And Purpose: Port-site hernias are rare complications that occur in approximately 1% of all laparoscopic surgeries. With the use of bladeless, blunt-tipped entry trocars, some surgeons have argued that not all port sites need fascial closure. Several cases of port-site hernia, however, have been reported recently with the use of bladeless trocars.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which has neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects in addition to its major role in angiogenesis, interacts with Aβ and accumulates in the senile plaques of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients' brains. It is known that Aβ binds to the heparin-binding domain (HBD) of the 165-amino acid VEGF variant, VEGF(165). In this study, we showed that triamterene (Trm) inhibits VEGF--Aβ interaction without affecting other biological activities of VEGF or Aβ.
