Wnt10b, an endogenous inhibitor of adipogenesis, maintains preadipocytes in an undifferentiated state by suppressing adipogenic transcription factors. We have previously demonstrated that Wnt10b transcription during adipogenesis is negatively regulated by X-box-binding protein 1 (XBP1), an important transcription factor of the unfolded protein response. In this report, we demonstrate that XBP1s can directly induce the transcription of microRNA-148a, which in turn mediates the silencing of Wnt10b mRNA during adipogenic differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells.

Background: Acanthamoeba and their proteins can elicit severe allergic airway inflammation in experimental mice.

Purpose: While a conventional single- or double-row repair technique could be applied for repair of C-shaped tears, a different surgical strategy should be considered for repair of U- or L-shaped tears because they typically have complex patterns with anterior, posterior, or both mobile leaves. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) expanded with fetal bovine serum (FBS) has some limitations, including the requirement of a long culture period to obtain a sufficient amount of stem cells. Priming of MSCs with serum from patients with ischemic stroke (stroke serum) increased the proliferation rate and the neurorestorative capacity of MSCs. We hypothesized that this novel priming method increases the proliferation rate of MSCs via the regulation of microRNAs (miRs).

Accumulated gene mutations in cancer suggest that multi-targeted suppression of affected signaling networks is a promising strategy for cancer treatment. In the present study, we report that 7-O-succinyl macrolactin A (SMA) suppresses tumor growth by stabilizing the β-catenin destruction complex, which was achieved through inhibition of regulatory components associated with the complex. SMA significantly reduced the activities of PI3K/Akt, which corresponded with a decrease in GSK3β phosphorylation, an increase in β-catenin phosphorylation, and a reduction in nuclear β-catenin content in HT29 human colon cancer cells.

We introduce a case of traumatic dislocation of the posterior tibial tendon with avulsion fracture of the medial malleolus in a 52-year-old female patient who was treated surgically with periosteal flap and suture anchor fixation. Based in the posteromedial ridge of the distal tibia, a quadrilateral periosteal flap was created and folded over the tendon, followed by fixation on the lateral aspect of the groove by use of multiple suture anchors. Clinical and radiological findings 25 months postoperatively showed well-preserved function of the ankle joint with stable tendon gliding.

We investigate the tricritical scaling behavior of the two-dimensional spin-1 Blume-Capel model by using the Wang-Landau method of measuring the joint density of states for lattice sizes up to 48×48 sites. We find that the specific heat deep in the first-order area of the phase diagram exhibits a double-peak structure of the Schottky-like anomaly appearing with the transition peak. The first-order transition curve is systematically determined by employing the method of field mixing in conjunction with finite-size scaling, showing a significant deviation from the previous data points.

We evaluated the chondroprotective effects of wogonin by investigating its effects on the gene expression and production of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) in primary cultured rabbit articular chondrocytes, as well as on production of MMP-3 in the rat knee. Rabbit articular chondrocytes were cultured in a monolayer, and RT-PCR was used to measure interleukin-1β (IL-1β)-induced expression of MMP-3, MMP-1, MMP-13, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs-4 (ADAMTS-4), and type II collagen. In rabbit articular chondrocytes, the effects of wogonin on IL-1β-induced production and proteolytic activity of MMP-3 were investigated using western blot analysis and casein zymography, respectively.

To determine whether pinworm infections and head lice infestations spread among children in orphanages, 117 children from 4 orphanages in Busan-si and Ulsan-si, Korea, were examined for enterobiasis and head lice infestation between January and February 2014. The overall rate of Enterobius vermicularis egg positivity was 0.85%, whereas none of the children had head lice infestations.

In this study, we hypothesized that the delivery of molecules that regulate the microenvironment after a cerebral infarction can influence regeneration potential after a stroke. Stromal cell-derived factor-1α (SDF-1α) is a chemoattractant molecule that plays a pivotal role in recruiting endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) to the infarct region after stroke. Increased SDF-1α expression leads to increased EPCs homing at the infarct region and induces neurogenesis, angiogenesis, neuroprotection, and stem cell homing.

The use of theoretical techniques in the structural development of dye-sensitized solar cells helps in the efficient screening of the dyes. To properly rationalize the dye's design process, benchmark calculations were conducted using long-range corrected exchange-correlation (xc) functionals with varying separation parameters to be able to predict the excited-state energies of triphenylamine-based dyes, namely: PPS, PSP, and PSS, wherein they differ at the π-conjugated bridge using thiophene and/or phenyl moieties. The results show that LC-ωPBE xc functional with an optimized parameter provided better correlation with the experimental results compared to the other functionals.
