With more than 150 recognized breeds, donkeys assume relevant economic importance, especially in developing countries. Even if the estimated number of heads worldwide is 53M, this species received less attention than other livestock species. Italy has traditionally been considered one of the cradles of European donkey breeding, and despite a considerable loss of biodiversity, today still counts nine autochthonous populations.

Livestock European diffusion followed different human migration waves from the Fertile Crescent. In sheep, at least two diffusion waves have shaped the current breeds' biodiversity generating a complex genetic pattern composed by either primitive or fine-wool selected breeds. Nowadays most of the sheep European breeds derive from the second wave which is supposed to have largely replaced oldest genetic signatures, with the exception of several primitive breeds confined on the very edge of Northern Europe.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on the genetic diversity of the Quadricorna sheep breed, a critically endangered and four-horned breed from Italy, examining its ancestral traits and connections to other primitive breeds from Europe and the Middle East.
  • - Researchers used advanced genetic analysis methods, including the Illumina OvineSNP50K array, to genotype 47 Quadricorna individuals and compared them with 33 other breeds, striving to understand their origins and migration patterns.
  • - Findings revealed that Quadricorna populations exhibit unique genetic characteristics distinct from other Italian breeds, showing closer relations to Middle Eastern and primitive European breeds, highlighting the complexities of livestock genetic diffusion in Europe.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study assessed the carcass and meat quality of lambs from five local sheep breeds in Southern Italy, focusing on chemical composition and fatty acid profiles.
  • - Meat analysis showed significant differences in fatty acid content among breeds, with Altamurana, Bagnolese, and Leccese having lower saturated fats and higher polyunsaturated fats, particularly conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).
  • - The findings highlight the nutritional benefits of autochthonous lamb meat, suggesting that promoting local breeds can prevent their extinction while providing healthier food options for consumers.

Background: In the last 50 years, the diversity of cattle breeds has experienced a severe contraction. However, in spite of the growing diffusion of cosmopolite specialized breeds, several local cattle breeds are still farmed in Italy. Genetic characterization of breeds represents an essential step to guide decisions in the management of farm animal genetic resources.

Water buffalo is a globally important species for agriculture and local economies. A de novo assembled, well-annotated reference sequence for the water buffalo is an important prerequisite for studying the biology of this species, and is necessary to manage genetic diversity and to use modern breeding and genomic selection techniques. However, no such genome assembly has been previously reported.

A newborn calf of the Agerolese cattle breed underwent clinical cytogenetic investigation because of hyperflexion of the forelimbs, red eyes and the inability to stand. Anamnesis revealed that the mother, phenotypically normal, carried a chromosomal aberration. The newborn died after 2 weeks, and no remarkable alterations were found by the veterinarian on postmortem examination.

Massese is an Italian sheep breed, with black or grey coat colour, mainly reared in the Tuscany and Emilia Romagna regions. Recently, the emerging interests in this breed have resulted in the production of Pecorino cheese obtained with only Massese milk. In order to be profitable, this marketing link between Massese breed and its products should be defended against fraudsters who could include milk of other sheep breeds or cow milk in Massese labelled productions.

A successful cryopreservation procedure for sperm must guarantee recovery of the morphological and functional characteristics of the cells following thawing so that preserved semen can to be used comparably with non-preserved semen. The aim of this work was to identify a species-specific freezing protocol for sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) spermatozoa by optimising all the stages in the cryopreservation procedure. In the first stage of the experiments, the cryoprotectants and the relative concentrations that had the least toxic effect on motility at room temperature were selected.
