Aims: A highly functional continuity of patient care, which is linked to the reduction of the risk of long-term hospitalization, above all for 'at-risk' patients. Research into an objective, reliable instrument for redirecting individual results to organizational aims to extend the entire country, is a fundamental step to move from a reactive assistance approach to a pro-active one.
Methods: An observational and descriptive retrospective study was carried out July - November 2014 in two Italian state hospitals, completing the BRASS Index within 48/72 hours of admission.
Introduction: Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) has a tendency to locally recur, spread proximally, and metastasize, in particular to lymphnodes and lungs. The aim of this report is to study the role of surgery and the extent of margins required for optimal management of patients with localized epithelioid sarcoma of the extremities.
Material And Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 77 patients affected by ES of the extremities treated at two different Institutions.
Giant Cell Tumor (GCT) represents about 20% of benign bone tumors, is locally aggressive although malignant transformation is extremely rare, <1% of cases but 2-3% give pulmonary metastasis. Age at onset is between 20 and 40 years with a slight predominance for the female gender. GCT is characterized by specific mutations in H3F3A gene encoding the protein histone 3.

The incidence of solitary intraosseous and adult myofibroma is extremely low. Although there have been a few reported cases of solitary intraosseous myofibroma in adult patients, most of these cases involved the craniofacial bones.

The safety and efficacy of denosumab in patients with GCTB was recently reported. We herein report a case of a benign recurrent GCTB with an H3F3A mutation that underwent secondary malignant transformation during treatment with denosumab.

Aim of this study is to present the largest cohort of oncology patients operated by CFR nailing by the Italian Orthopaedic Society (SIOT) Bone Metastasis Study Group.
Methods: 53 adult oncology patients were operated on with a CFR-PEEK nail.
Cancer-induced bone pain (CIBP) is common in patients with bone metastases (BM), significantly impairing quality of life. The current treatments for CIBP are limited since they are often ineffective. Local acidosis derived from glycolytic carcinoma and tumor-induced osteolysis is only barely explored cause of pain.

Purpose: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) of the extremities in children are a heterogeneous group of tumors with a very different prognosis for which optimal treatment remains controversial.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 97 patients younger than 15 years old affected by limb soft tissue sarcomas. All cases were histologically revised, and tumor grade was assessed according to the FNLCC system.
In this clinical trial, we investigated if biochemical bone turnover markers (BTM) changed according to the progression of bone healing induced by autologous expanded MSC combined with a biphasic calcium phosphate in patients with delayed union or nonunion of long bone fractures. Bone formation markers, bone resorption markers, and osteoclast regulatory proteins were measured by enzymatic immunoassay before surgery and after 6, 12, and 24 weeks. A satisfactory bone healing was obtained in 23 out of 24 patients.

Background: Angiosarcoma (AS) is a rare and malignant tumor which mainly arises in the skin and superficial soft tissue and less frequently in deep soft tissue and bones. Some cases of AS are described in association with vascular and orthopedic devices. Nonetheless, only a few cases of AS around THA are reported in the literature.

Purpose: The standard primary treatment for soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is a wide surgical resection, preceded or followed by radiotherapy. Purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the efficacy of perioperative brachytherapy (BRT) plus postoperative external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) in patients with intermediate-high risk STS.
Material And Methods: BRT delivered dose was 20 Gy.
Purpose: The treatment of giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone remains controversial. Intralesional surgery (curettage) results in a higher rate of local recurrence, but better functional results compared to resection. The aim of this study was to assess whether the use of curettage was successful in the treatment of GCT of long bones.

Introduction: The diagnosis of synovial sarcoma (SS) is currently based on clinical, morphological, immunohistochemical and cytogenetic data. Some of these factors such as grade and histology, specific translocations (SS18-SSX1 vs. SS18-SSX2) and the reduced expression of INI1, were proposed as prognostic variables.

Only 4 cases in which the high grade component showed epithelial differentiation have been reported in the literature; three featured a squamous and the one a glandular epithelial component. Here we describe a case of dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma exhibiting epithelial "adamantinoma-like" basaloid features.

In addition, this study determined risk factors that are associated with local recurrence of enchondroma or ACT treated with curettage.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 54 patients with enchondroma and 35 patients with ACT of the long bones treated by curettage between 1986 and 2015.
Background: Previous trials from our group suggested an overall survival benefit with five cycles of adjuvant full-dose epirubicin plus ifosfamide in localised high-risk soft-tissue sarcoma of the extremities or trunk wall, and no difference in overall survival benefit between three cycles versus five cycles of the same neoadjuvant regimen. We aimed to show the superiority of the neoadjuvant administration of histotype-tailored regimen to standard chemotherapy.
Methods: For this international, open-label, randomised, controlled, phase 3, multicentre trial, patients were enrolled from 32 hospitals in Italy, Spain, France, and Poland.
Background: Soft tissue sarcomas are often inappropriately excised; it is, however, still a matter of debate whether the presence of residual disease in the re-excision specimen can affect patients' prognosis. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of re-excision after unplanned surgery of primary soft tissue sarcomas (STS) of the extremities.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 452 adults with grade 2-3, localized STS (349 primary and 103 unplanned excisions).
The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the performance of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tool Xpert MRSA/SA SSTI test (Cepheid, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) on periprosthetic samples from a cohort of patients with suspected prosthetic joint infection (PJI). Seventy adult patients were included in this prospective study. On the basis of the preoperative evaluation, 39 patients were clinically considered to have a PJI, whereas 31 were presumed to suffer from an aseptic mobilization of the implant.

This study describes the clinical, radiological and histological features of eight new cases of fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma collected at a single institution between 1982 and 2016. The presence of GNAS and IDH1/2 mutations and MDM2 amplification was explored to evaluate possible links between fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma, fibrous dysplasia, de-differentiated chondrosarcoma and low-grade osteosarcoma.

Background: ECCO essential requirements for quality cancer care (ERQCC) are checklists and explanations of organisation and actions that are necessary to give high-quality care to patients who have a specific tumour type. They are written by European experts representing all disciplines involved in cancer care. ERQCC papers give oncology teams, patients, policymakers and managers an overview of the elements needed in any healthcare system to provide high quality of care throughout the patient journey.

The patient presented with a slow growing mass of the proximal third of the right buttock and had swelling, discomfort in sitting, and right-hip pain during walking for 2 months. On MRI, a soft-tissue mass was noted between the gluteus maximus and the gluteus medius muscle.
