Introduction: Adolescents and young adults (AYA, 14-24 years) bear a disproportionate burden of new HIV infections in Nigeria and are more likely to have worse HIV outcomes compared to other age groups. However, little is known about their access to recommended sexual health care services, including HIV self-testing (HIVST), sexually transmitted infections (STI) testing, sexual behavior patterns, awareness and or access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and overall risk for HIV.

Methods: We present a baseline analysis of the 4 Youth by Youth randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the uptake and sustainability of crowdsourced HIVST strategies led by and for young people across 14 states in Nigeria.

Article Synopsis
  • * Currently, Washington, DC is far from its goal of fewer than 130 new HIV cases per year by 2030, with only 6,724 users of PrEP compared to the target of over 13,000 high-risk residents needing the medication.
  • * This study will conduct a needs assessment using in-depth interviews with various stakeholders, including pharmacists and health officials, to gather insights for creating standard procedures for implementing pharmacy-based PrEP services in local retail pharmacies.

Background: According to the 2016-2017 Tanzania HIV Impact Survey, only 45% of men living with HIV (MLWH) were aware of their HIV status. In an effort to increase HIV testing in Tanzania, including among men, the Government of Tanzania passed a law in December 2019 allowing HIV self-testing (HIVST) to be included in the national testing strategies. The objective of this paper is to describe the development and pilot feasibility assessment of the Self-Testing Education and Promotion (STEP) intervention, which includes male peer education and demand creation for HIVST, and nurse-led distribution of HIVST kits in a community setting.

  • It employed a three-arm, cluster-randomized trial design involving male fishermen to compare different methods of promoting healthcare services—enhanced standard care, peer education, and peer distribution education.
  • The outcomes measured included the rate of schistosomiasis and the uptake of HIV treatments and circumcision, with a focus on achieving these goals within 28 days post-intervention.

Background: HIV self-testing (HIVST) offers an innovative and promising approach to increasing HIV testing among Black men in the United States, a population disproportionately affected by HIV. However, engaging Black men in traditional HIV prevention programs has been challenging due to stigma, medical mistrust, and limited access to preventive health services. This formative qualitative study aimed to explore the potential of utilizing barbershops as an example of a nontraditional healthcare venue to promote and distribute HIVST.

Experiencing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may impact personal opinions, attitudes, and judgments, which can further result in HIV-related stigma. HIV-related stigma consequentially may impact HIV preventive measures such as HIV testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis uptake, and condom use. The extent to which ACEs influence HIV-related stigma perception has not been well studied.

Background: Tanzania faces a significant burden of HIV, with particular challenges in reaching men and ensuring timely linkage to care. To address these issues, HIV self-testing (HIVST) has been implemented to increase HIV testing and the National HIV Hotlines are being considered as a strategy to facilitate linkage to care. This study aimed to assess the willingness of Tanzanian men to receive support from use the National HIV Hotline via mobile phones for HIVST and linkage to care.

Globally, men are less likely to access HIV services, and addressing HIV service challenges among men is crucial to the global HIV/AIDS response. HIV self-testing (HIVST) has been shown to be a potentially effective strategy in improving HIV testing coverage among men. This study assessed and identified factors influencing willingness to receive HIVST kits from sexual partners among men in Tanzania.

The authors report on their development of a National Advisory Board (NAB) to guide a funded project: Two in One: HIV + COVID-19 Screening and Testing Model. This project aimed to improve primary care practitioners' capacity to routinize HIV, PrEP/PEP, and COVID-19 vaccine screenings for all their patients while relying on culturally responsive communication with their minoritized patients. To approach their monumental research and education tasks, they created a NAB, drawing from the literature on advisory boards to (a) promote board member engagement and (b) progress successfully through the six stages suggested for successful advisory boards.

Background: HIV partner counselling and testing in antenatal care (ANC) is a crucial strategy to raise the number of males who know their HIV status. However, in many settings like Tanzania, male involvement in antenatal care remains low, and there is a definite need for innovative strategies to increase male partner involvement. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of mobile phone intervention increase male partner ANC attendance for HIV testing in Moshi municipal, Tanzania.

The global burden of HIV remains a critical public health challenge, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, home to over two-thirds of individuals living with HIV. HIV self-testing (HIVST) has emerged as a promising strategy endorsed by the World Health Organization to achieve UNAIDS targets. Background: With substance use rates increasing in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), an understanding of the accessibility and effectiveness of rehabilitative services for people who use alcohol and other drugs (AOD) is critical in the global efforts to diagnose and treat substance use disorders (SUD). This scoping review seeks to address the gaps in knowledge related to the types of research that have been conducted regarding inpatient or residential SUD treatment in SSA, the settings in which the research was conducted, and the study countries.

Methods: A search of three databases, PubMED, Scopus, and African Index Medicus, was conducted for publications related to the treatment of SUD in inpatient or residential settings in SSA.

Community-based HIV treatment initiation and continuation helps to address social determinants of health (SDOH) barriers to care and increase antiretroviral therapy (ART) uptake and adherence. Similarly, community-based pre-exposure prophylaxis (cbPrEP) services can help address SDOH barriers such as transportation costs and stigma. However, few studies have examined cbPrEP programming in the Washington, District of Columbia (DC) area where more Blacks are disproportionately affected by HIV and have low PrEP uptake.

This qualitative study reports on female sex workers' (FSWs) perceptions of the quality of antiretroviral therapy (ART) services they received as part of a community-based ART distribution intervention compared to services received by FSWs in the standard of care (SOC) arm. In-depth interviews were conducted with 24 participants to explore their perceptions of the quality of ART services. Data was analyzed using a quality-of-care framework that included but was not limited to, domains of accessibility, effective organization of care, package of services, and patient-centered care.

Background: Partner-delivered HIV self-testing kits has previously been highlighted as a safe, acceptable and effective approach to reach men. However, less is known about its real-world implementation in reaching partners of people living with HIV. We evaluated programmatic implementation of partner-delivered self-testing through antenatal care (ANC) attendees and people newly diagnosed with HIV by assessing use, positivity, linkage and cost per kit distributed.

New strategies are needed to improve HIV testing rates in Tanzania, particularly among adult men. We sought to investigate if HIV oral self-testing would increase HIV testing uptake in Tanzanian rural community homes. The study design was a prospective community-randomized pilot study, in two matched villages with similar characteristics (intervention and control villages) Before data collection, we trained village health workers and research assistants for one week.

Background: Fishing exposes fishermen to schistosomiasis-infested fresh water and concurrently through precarious livelihoods to risky sexual behaviour, rendering these two infections occupational hazards for fishermen. This study aimed to characterize the knowledge of the two conditions to obtain necessary data for a subsequent cluster randomized trial designed to investigate demand creation strategies for joint HIV-schistosomiasis service provision in fishing villages on the shores of southern Lake Malawi.

Methods: Enumeration of all resident fishermen in 45 clusters (fishing communities) was carried out between November 2019 and February 2020.
