By the way, doctor. I have a severely arthritic hip. It's pretty clear that I'm a candidate for hip replacement. When I looked on the Internet, there were a lot of Web sites promoting "anterior hip replacement." What is it, and is it any better than the traditional approach?

Twenty retrieved Scorpio posterior-stabilized implants were available for analysis. The mean implantation time was 22 months (range, 2 days-42 months). Favorable types and amounts of surface damage were seen on the tibiofemoral and backsides of these modular PE liners that had been packaged in an inert environment and then sterilized by gamma irradiation.

The orthopedists in my area do a metal-ball-in-polyethylene-cup replacement that I'm told lasts 10-15 years. But I've heard that metal-ball-in-metal-cup replacements last longer. What do you think?

By the way, doctor. I'm 86 and have been getting four cortisone shots a year for the past several years for the arthritis in my right knee. But my doctor seems to think the shots are a bad idea. Doesn't the pain relief outweigh any long-term harm, especially at my age?
