Making reliable decisions in the study of wildlife diseases: using hypothesis tests, statistical power, and observed effects.

The increasing importance of wildlife diseases in conservation efforts places an additional importance on research study design, data analysis, and interpretation. In this paper, we explore the design and analysis of wildlife disease data with regard to hypothesis testing, statistical power, sample sizes, the relative costs of type I versus type II errors, and effect size. To illustrate these ideas, we conducted a literature review of the Journal of Wildlife Diseases (JWD), ran computer simulations that estimate type II error rates for statistical techniques commonly used in JWD, and reanalyzed previously published data on disease prevalence.

Bilateral trigeminal neuralgia associated with limited systemic sclerosis.

A young patient with limited systemic sclerosis and medically resistant bilateral trigeminal neuralgia was successfully treated with microvascular decompression. To our knowledge, this is the first published report of this type of case.

Mock-ups as "interactive laboratories": mixed methods research using inpatient unit room mock-ups.

Objective: To establish evidence-based design (EBD) guidelines for inpatient rooms at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities.

Background: Simulation allows clients, designers, and researchers to visualize how users might interact with a proposed design before actual construction of the design. This study used mock-ups as a simulation technique during a study of the VA inpatient room standards.
