Environmental enrichment (EE) consists of increased living space, complex stimuli, and social interaction that collectively confer neurobehavioral benefits in preclinical models of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The typical EE approach entails implementation immediately after surgery and continual exposure, which is not clinically applicable, as TBI patients often only receive rehabilitation after critical care, and then only for a few hours per day. We are focused on developing a clinically relevant model of neurorehabilitation by refining the timing of initiation and duration of EE exposure after TBI.

Introduction: Distributed training of students from a variety of health professions is increasing in South Africa because of the type of learning it offers and that it caters for the increasing number of students being accepted into health sciences programs. Challenges and facilitators to distributed training are well documented in the literature, and include increased distance from the academic home, human resources for health challenges, student access to support systems, and identifying learning environments to match learning outcomes. In the case of the Rural Clinical School in the Western Cape, South Africa, 'academic coordinators' were employed on site to fulfil the role of coordinating and supervising student learning and community engagement.

Two Novel Adenoviruses in Free-Living British lizards.

In this study, we describe two novel adenoviruses isolated from (i) a common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) found dead and examined post-mortem and (ii) pooled samples from free-living sand lizards (Lacerta agilis agilis). Sequencing indicated the two were closely related atadenovirus strains which were distinct from previously recorded adenoviruses in lizards. Adenoviruses are not always associated with disease in squamates, but morbidity and mortality have been reported.

FOX proteins are a superfamily of transcription factors which share a DNA-binding domain referred to as the forkhead domain. Our focus is on the FOXP subfamily members, which are involved in language and cognition amongst other things. Ocean acidification (OA) is considered an important threat to coral reef ecosystems, because it reduces the availability of carbonate ions that reef-building corals need to produce their skeletons.
