Article Synopsis
  • Accurate diagnosis of enteric fever is difficult in low- and middle-income countries due to overlapping symptoms with other illnesses; this study evaluated the effectiveness of the TUBEX TF test in Indonesia.
  • Out of 301 patients clinically diagnosed with enteric fever, only 16.6% were confirmed through blood culture or PCR, with common symptoms including fever and abdominal pain predominantly in school-aged children.
  • The TUBEX TF test showed mixed results, with high sensitivity but low specificity, leading to over-diagnosis; acute IgG testing proved more reliable for identifying true cases of enteric fever.

Article Synopsis
  • - Ongoing HIV transmission is a major health concern in Indonesia, prompting the development of a new multiassay algorithm (MAA) to identify recent HIV infections using various biomarkers.
  • - The study analyzed plasma samples from 140 HIV-positive adults across 19 hospitals, revealing that 12.5% of newly diagnosed individuals were classified as having recent infections.
  • - Drug resistance mutations were found in two individuals, highlighting the challenge of managing ongoing HIV transmission, particularly among those infected with drug-resistant strains in Indonesia.

Background: Histoplasma capsulatum exposure is rarely suspected in Indonesia. Pulmonary histoplasmosis can occur simultaneously with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) or as an alternative diagnosis in clinically-diagnosed TB patients with no microbiological evidence of TB. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of anti-H.

Accurate immunoassays with a good correlation to neutralizing antibodies are required to support SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis, management, vaccine deployment, and epidemiological investigation. We conducted a study to evaluate the performance and correlation of the surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT) and other commercial immunoassays. We tested 107 sera of COVID-19 confirmed cases from three different time points, 58 confirmed non-COVID-19 sera, and 52 sera collected before the pandemic with two sVNTs, seven chemiluminescent assays, and one fluorescein assay.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, COVID-19 vaccines have been developed, and the World Health Oraganization (WHO) has granted emergency use listing to multiple vaccines. Studies of vaccine immunogenicity data from implementing COVID-19 vaccines by national immunization programs in single studies spanning multiple countries and continents are limited but critically needed to answer public health questions on vaccines, such as comparing immune responses to different vaccines and among different populations.

Blood culturing remains the "gold standard" for bloodstream infection (BSI) diagnosis, but the method is inaccessible to many developing countries due to high costs and insufficient resources. To better understand the utility of blood cultures among patients in Indonesia, a country where blood cultures are not routinely performed, we evaluated data from a previous cohort study that included blood cultures for all participants. An acute febrile illness study was conducted from July 2013 to June 2016 at eight major hospitals in seven provincial capitals in Indonesia.

Article Synopsis
  • A significant change in the availability of antiretroviral therapies has allowed researchers to assess new second-line treatments for HIV-1 in low- and middle-income countries through the DEFT trial.
  • The DEFT trial, initiated in 2017, compares a standard regimen of boosted darunavir with NRTIs to a newer NRTI-sparing regimen with boosted darunavir and dolutegravir.
  • Arising from recent updates in treatment guidelines, the study decided to incorporate the evaluation of the TLD regimen as a third arm, instead of starting a new trial, to optimize resources and streamline recruitment.

Article Synopsis
  • Reinfection with SARS-CoV-2 is common, but the level of protection from previous infections, especially against Variants of Concern (VOC), is not well understood.
  • A 49-year-old unvaccinated man experienced two different SARS-CoV-2 infections about six months apart; the first was severe (B.1.466.2 variant), requiring ICU care, while the second (Delta variant) was mild and did not need hospitalization.
  • The case suggests that as antibody levels wane, reinfection can occur, highlighting the need for more research on how prior infections might influence the severity of future infections.

Background: Due to their immunomodulatory properties, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been proposed to have therapeutic potential to improve clinical outcomes in COVID-19. However, the safety and efficacy profile of MSC infusion therapy in patients with non-severe COVID-19 infection has not been completely established; there is, in particular, a substantial void in the literature on dose-dependent studies of MSC infusion in patients with low clinical risk COVID-19 infection.

Methods: This phase 1 double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial examines the safety, feasibility, and tolerability of 2 doses (high and low) of DW-MSC in patients with low clinical risk COVID-19.

HIV prevalence in Indonesia is increasing, and only 64% of infected individuals know their status. In a prospective cohort of 1,453 hospitalized patients with unexplained fever, 46 (3.2%) had HIV, including 15 (1.

Emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in dengue virus (DENV)-endemic areas complicates the diagnosis of both infections. COVID-19 cases may be misdiagnosed as dengue, particularly when relying on DENV IgM, which can remain positive months after infection. To estimate the extent of this problem, we evaluated sera from 42 confirmed COVID-19 patients for evidence of DENV infection.

Primaquine is an effective anti-hypnozoite drug for and However, it can trigger erythrocyte hemolysis in people with glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. In a previous report from South Central Timor (SCT), Indonesia, we described the prevalence of Vanua Lava, Chatham, and Viangchan variants; in this study, other G6PD variants (Kaiping, Coimbra, Gaohe, Canton, and Mahidol) were subsequently analyzed. For clarity, all of these results are described together.
