Moreover, the traditional livestock industry has significant concerns that the growth of meat analogs will encroach upon the livestock market and strongly opposes the approval of cultured meat and other meat analogs.

Rapid and Easy Detection of Microcystin-LR Using a Bioactivated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Based Field-Effect Transistor Sensor.

In this study, we developed a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-based field-effect transistor (MWCNT-FET) sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity for microcystin-LR (MC-LR). Carboxylated MWCNTs were activated with an MC-LR-targeting aptamer (MCTA). Subsequently the bioactivated MWCNTs were immobilized between interdigitated drain (D) and source (S) electrodes through self-assembly.

Efficacy and feasibility of a forehead flap surgical guide for nasal reconstruction.

For successful nasal reconstruction using a forehead flap, three-dimensional (3D) nasal defects need to be translated into a two-dimensional (2D) forehead surface. For this study, a patient-specific 3D-printed forehead flap guide that could precisely translate a virtually simulated nasal shape into a 2D flap template was developed. Effect of physical activity on cognition and daily living activities of the elderly with mild dementia.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a physical activity program on cognitive function and ADLs in elderly people with mild dementia. [Subjects and Methods] Both groups (n=60) participated in a cognition program three times a week for 30 minutes each time over an eight-week period. In addition, the experimental group (n=30) underwent a physical activity program for 30 minutes three times a week over an eight-week period.

Detection of early stage prostate cancer by using a simple carbon nanotube@paper biosensor.

This study is an investigation for an inexpensive, simple and sensitive biosensor to detect prostate cancer using bioactivated-multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs, diameter of 20nm, length of 5µm) and a micro-pore filter paper (pore size of 0.45µm). [Subjects and Methods] A total of 30 study subjects were selected and randomly divided into an experimental group of 15 subjects, who received the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation neck pattern exercise, and a control group of 15 subjects, who received a traditional rehabilitation treatment. [Results] Statistically significant changes in all the items of the Trunk Impairment Scale, the Trunk Impairment Scale total score, and the Berg Balance Scale were observed in both the experimental group and the control group.

[Purpose] This study examined the effects of bilateral upper extremity exercises on trunk control, balance, and risk of falls in stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 30 study subjects were selected and randomly divided into experimental and control groups containing 15 subjects each, who received bilateral upper extremity activities and conventional rehabilitation treatment, respectively. [Results] There were statistically significant differences between groups in all sub-items and total trunk impairment and Berg Balance scale scores.

[Purpose] This study examined how an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) influences the weight-bearing of chronic stroke patients during the performance of five functional standing tasks. [Subjects and Methods] Sixteen patients with stroke participated in this experiment. The subjects performed functional standing tasks with or without the AFO and weight bearing was measured during the tasks.

Effects of neck exercises on swallowing function of patients with stroke.

[Purpose] This study examined the effects of neck exercises using PNF on the swallowing function of stroke patients with dysphasia. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 26 study subjects were selected and randomly divided into an experimental group of 13 subjects, who received the PNF-based short neck flexion exercises, and a control group of 13 subjects, who received the Shaker exercise. [Results] The experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in premature bolus loss, residue in the valleculae, laryngeal elevation, epiglottic closure, residue in the pyriform sinuses, and coating of the pharyngeal wall after swallowing, and improvements in pharyngeal transit time, and aspiration on both the new VFSS scale and the ASHA NOMS scale.

Temperament of premature infants with cerebral palsy.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the infant temperaments of children with cerebral palsy due to premature birth. [Subjects and Methods] Data were collected through questionnaires sent to 118 mothers of infants diagnosed with cerebral palsy due to premature birth. [Results] Different infant temperament scores were obtained according to the degrees of disability, type of palsy, birth weights, gestational age, and periods of hospitalization in an NICU; however, the differences were not statistically significant.

HDAC inhibitors induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition in colon carcinoma cells.

The effects of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) differ in various types of cancers. We investigated the EMT phenotype in four colon cancer cell lines when challenged with HDAC inhibitors trichostatin A (TSA) and valproic acid (VPA) with or without transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) treatment. Four colon cancer cell lines with different phenotypes in regards to tumorigenicity, microsatellite stability and DNA mutation were used.
