Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has shown potential in modulating cortical activity and treating depression. Despite its promise, variability in electrode montage configurations and electric field strength across studies has resulted in inconsistent outcomes. Traditional meta-analytic methods assessing the effect of tDCS in depression typically do not compare tDCS montage and the anatomical distribution of electric field, which is a major source of inter-experimental variability.

Over the past three decades, non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques have gained worldwide attention and demonstrated therapeutic potential in various medical fields, particularly psychiatry. The emergence of these novel techniques has led to an increased need for robust training programs to provide practitioners, whether clinicians or scientists, with the necessary skills and knowledge. In response, a comprehensive training curriculum for NIBS in psychiatry has been developed in France.

Article Synopsis
  • Bipolar disorder (BD) is a complex mental health condition, and researchers aimed to identify a neurodevelopmental phenotype (NDP) that contributes to its development and impacts clinical outcomes.
  • By analyzing data from over 4,400 BD patients, they established nine specific clinical features that characterize this NDP, which are linked to poorer prognosis and treatment responses.
  • The findings suggest that patients with a higher NDP load may have overlapping genetic factors with ADHD, indicating a potential shared biological basis for these disorders.

Objectives: Preventing minor-attracted persons from acting on their impulses is a significant public health concern. To address this, the STOP telephone helpline was established nationwide in France in January 2021. This service acts as a bridge, connecting callers with their nearest CRIAVS (resource centers for professionals working with sex offenders) where they can speak with a healthcare professional who can guide them toward appropriate care if needed.

What Is Known About The Subject: Caring for a family member with a mental illness induces a burden on the caregiver, an impact on their quality of life and premature ageing of more than ten years.

What The Paper Adds To Existing Knowledge: We conducted systematised and individualised nursing interviews with family members, on the first days of a relative's hospitalisation, during hospitalisation and three months after discharge. We observed persistent depressive symptoms during and after hospitalisation.

Article Synopsis
  • - Clozapine is effective for treatment-resistant schizophrenia but carries serious side effects like hematological issues and myocarditis, alongside less severe but impactful dermatological reactions.
  • - A 25-year-old male experienced cholinergic urticaria—intense itching and redness triggered by sweating—after four months on clozapine, which impaired his daily life despite treatment adjustments.
  • - Switching from clozapine to quetiapine resulted in improvement, highlighting the need for personalized treatment plans and the importance of managing side effects, even those that appear after an extended period.

Catatonia is a severe and potentially life-threatening neuropsychiatric condition. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the gold standard second-line intervention for catatonia after benzodiazepine failure. However, the access to ECT can be particularly challenging, especially during periods of increased strain on medical facilities, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction: Metacognition is the ability to reflect on one's own cognitive processes, monitor and regulate them to enhance mental performance. Social cognition involves the capacity to perceive and respond to social cues from others. The study of metacognition and social cognition is an expanding research field in psychiatry.

Background: despite years of development, response to neurostimulation remains partial and variable. Combining techniques could improve clinical efficacy and tolerance.

Objective: to examine the literature on the effects of combining several neurostimulation techniques in patients with mental disorders.

Evidences suggest that inflammation is increased in a subgroup of patients with depression. Moreover, increased peripheral inflammatory markers (cells and proteins) are associated with some, but not all depressive symptoms. On the other hand, similar studies on bipolar disorders mainly focused on blood cytokines.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) in schizophrenia and specific white matter abnormalities, focusing on the left arcuate fasciculus and transcallosal pathways.
  • Findings reveal that schizophrenia patients with medication-resistant AVH have lower fractional anisotropy (FA) values in crucial areas of the left arcuate fasciculus and transcallosal pathways compared to healthy controls, suggesting disrupted white matter integrity.
  • Additionally, significant correlations were found between lower FA values in the left arcuate fasciculus and the severity of AVH’s attentional salience, indicating a possible link between these white matter changes and the experience of hallucinations.

Priapism is a rare pathological condition defined as painful and persistent penile erection that is unrelated to sexual stimulation. It can be classified as ischaemic or non-ischaemic. Many causes have been attributed to ischaemic priapism, including the use of some medications such as antipsychotics.

Since the beginning of the health crisis, health care personnel have been confronted with an influx of patients with COVID-19. Given the complexity of the situation, the reorganization of care was done on an emergency basis to ensure careful management to limit the spread of the disease among health care personnel and patients. As patients suffering from psychiatric disorders were not spared, the Ville-Evrard Public Health Establishment set up a strategy to deal with this crisis by setting up a COVID+ unit specialized in the care of patients suffering from mental disorders and infected by the Coronavirus.

Unlabelled: In the early steps of an emerging infectious disease epidemic such as Covid-19, uncertainties about the nature of the disease, its spread and impact can lead to emotional distress. In addition, the studies on confinement during an epidemic have shown a psychological impact of this measure on the feelings of anxiety and depression in the general population.

Method: We assessed the psychological health of 550 patients followed up in outpatient psychiatry, via a pandemic-related teleconsultation during the first confinement period between March and June 2020.

Background: Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) is a form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation that has shown to be effective in treatment-resistant depression. Through studying the effect of iTBS on healthy subjects, we wished to attain a greater understanding of its impact on the brain. Our objective was to assess whether 10 iTBS sessions altered the neural processing of emotional stimuli, mood and brain anatomy in healthy subjects.

Introduction: Psychiatric disorders are common in peripartum and are associated with adverse outcomes for mother and fetus. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the most effective and safe options to treat severe mental illness, including during the perinatal period. Nevertheless, it remains underutilized during this period, possibly due to negative representations.

The burden of caregivers of patients with chronic diseases has been the subject of research for several years, but few studies have focused on the suffering of family members from the time of their first hospitalization in psychiatry. The identification of the determinants of this burden would allow us to propose early management aimed at improving the well-being of the patients' family and friends and maximizing intra-family resources.

Intermittent Theta Burst Stimulation (iTBS) is a design of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and could be a candidate to replace rTMS in the treatment of depression, thanks to its efficacy, shorter duration, and ease of use. The antidepressant mechanism of iTBS, and whether this mechanism is mediated by a modulation of cortical excitability, remains unknown. Using a randomized double-blind, sham-controlled trial, 30 healthy volunteers received either iTBS or a sham treatment targeting the left DorsoLateral PreFrontal Cortex (L-DLPFC), twice a day over 5 consecutive days.

Background: Risk behaviors among young people are a major social and public health issue. This study aims to assess the impact of a life-skills-based prevention program (called Mission Papillagou) on self-esteem, well-being, and risk behaviors among adolescents.

Method: In a two-arm controlled study involving 520 school pupils aged between 10 and 15 years old, participants taking part in the prevention program (the Papillagou group) were compared to pupils who did not take part (the control group).
