Snapping Biceps Femoris Syndrome: A Case Presentation and Review of Current Literature.

Snapping of the biceps femoris tendon over the fibular head is a cause of symptomatic lateral knee pain. We presented the case of an active patient in his mid-20s who had bilateral snapping of his biceps femoris tendon, with no history of trauma. The pathophysiology in our case was thought to be secondary to prominent fibular heads.

Orthopaedic Eponyms: A Tool of the Past.

Eponyms are commonplace in the medical vernacular, however, their use has become increasingly controversial amongst clinicians. Whilst some view them as an honour bestowed on those whose achievements deserve recognition, others see them as thwarted with problems due to confusion, imprecision and unwittingly applauding controversial figures. Nevertheless, the history and culture retained within eponyms define modern-day medicine.

A Randomized Trial of Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation Versus Alternative Forms of Surgical Cartilage Management in Patients With a Failed Primary Treatment for Chondral or Osteochondral Defects in the Knee.

Background: There are limited randomized controlled trials with long-term outcomes comparing autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) versus alternative forms of surgical cartilage management within the knee.

Purpose: To determine at 5 years after surgery whether ACI was superior to alternative forms of cartilage management in patients after a failed previous treatment for chondral or osteochondral defects in the knee.

The Epidemiology of Adult Distal Femoral Shaft Fractures in a Central London Major Trauma Centre Over Five Years.

Background: Distal femoral fractures account for 3-6% of adult femoral fractures and 0.4% of all fractures and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality rates. As countries develop inter-hospital trauma networks and adapt healthcare policy for an aging population there is growing importance for research within this field.

Early results of patellofemoral inlay resurfacing arthroplasty using the HemiCap Wave prosthesis.

Background: Common surgical treatment options for isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis include arthroscopic procedures, total knee replacement and patellofemoral replacement. The HemiCap Wave patellofemoral resurfacing prosthesis is a novel inlay design introduced in 2009 with scarce published data on its functional outcomes. We aim to prospectively evaluate early functional outcomes and complications, for patients undergoing a novel inlay resurfacing arthroplasty for isolated patellofemoral arthrosis in an independent centre.

Increase in quality and quantity of orthopaedic studies from 2002 to 2012.

Purpose: To compare the level of evidence of orthopaedic studies published in 2002 and 2012 to determine whether the quality and quantity of studies have increased.

Methods: The top 10 orthopaedic journals in 2002 and 2012 were identified, according to the Thomson Reuters impact factor. The level of evidence of each clinical article between January and June in 2002 and 2012 were determined by 2 senior orthopaedic trainees, according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine 2011 Levels of Evidence.
