Introduction: The overall prevalence of gambling problems across prison populations is currently unknown. The objective of the present study was therefore to quantitatively synthetize prevalence estimates of gambling problems in prison populations using a random effects meta-analytic model and to investigate if the estimates were moderated by time frame, cut-off levels, and sample size.

Methods: To be included the studies had to report original data on the prevalence of gambling problems in a prison sample and to be written in a European language, whereas data based on abstracts or qualitative reports were excluded.

Purpose Of Review: The present umbrella review systematically searches and synthesizes recent (2021-2023) systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMA) on androgen administration in humans.

Recent Findings: Results from 19 SRMA are synthesized. Four themes were identified: market for androgens, prevalence of androgen abuse, psychological effects of androgens, and clinical/therapeutic effects of androgens.

Article Synopsis
  • - The review examined the prevalence of androgen dependence among users through a comprehensive analysis of 26 studies, revealing an overall lifetime dependence rate of 34.4%, with no significant gender difference in prevalence.
  • - Analysis showed that higher proportions of male participants in studies correlated with increased dependence rates, and combined assessment methods (interviews and questionnaires) reported higher prevalence rates compared to interviews alone.
  • - The findings highlighted that one in three individuals starting androgen use becomes dependent, often alongside serious demographic and psychosocial issues, indicating the need for targeted public health interventions.

  • Injury is a significant public health concern in Europe, with notable differences in injury death rates and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) across sub-regions and countries, particularly between Eastern, Central, and Western Europe.
  • The study analyzed GBD 2019 data from 44 European countries over 20 years, focusing on injury mortality and DALY rates by cause and sex while assessing inequalities based on country comparisons.
  • Findings reveal that Eastern Europe has the highest injury death rates (80 deaths per 100,000), while Italy has the lowest injury DALY rate, indicating that males experience greater disparities in injury impact than females.

Article Synopsis
  • - The meta-analysis explored the link between problem gambling and personality traits from the five-factor model, aiming to identify factors affecting these relationships, such as gambling diagnosis and the number of items used in trait assessment.
  • - Searches across six databases yielded 28 studies with over 20,500 participants, revealing significant correlations between problem gambling and traits like neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness, and extroversion.
  • - The analysis highlighted that the presence of a gambling diagnosis moderated the strength of the correlation, with a notable negative relationship to extroversion; it also indicated some publication bias, but results remained consistent after adjustments.

Background And Aims: The effect of internet-based psychological treatment for gambling problems has not been previously investigated by meta-analysis. The present study is therefore a quantitative synthesis of studies on the effects of internet-based treatment for gambling problems. Given that effects may vary according to the presence of therapist support and control conditions, it was presumed that subgroup analyses would elucidate such effects.

The relationship between anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use and aggression and psychological distress requires further elucidation. No previous study has examined whether the latent patterns of aggression and psychological distress are the same in male and female AAS users. Multigroup latent class analysis (MLCA) can be used to classify individuals into groups based on their responses on a set of variables, and to investigate measurement invariance across subgroups.

No systematic review or meta-analysis concerning the prevalence of shift work disorder (SWD) has been conducted so far. The aim was thus to review prevalence studies of SWD, to calculate an overall prevalence by a random effects meta-analysis approach and investigate correlates of SWD prevalence using a random-effects meta-regression. Systematic searches were conducted in ISI Web of Science, PsycNET, PubMed, and Google Scholar using the search terms "shift work disorder" and "shift work sleep disorder.
