The Impact of Non-trauma Factors on Trauma Patient Mortality and Hospital Resource Utilization: Population-Based Retrospective Review.

Background: The death of trauma patients with low injury severity scores (ISS) may not be fully explained by the severity of their injuries. Our objective was to evaluate preexisting conditions (PECs) that may contribute to the mortality rate of and hospital resources consumed by patients with low ISS.

Methods: Trauma patients with ISS <9 were selected from the National Trauma Database Bank [NTDB] [2019-21].

Biocatalysis has been widely employed for the generation of carbon-carbon/heteroatom stereocentres, yet its application in chiral C(sp)-S bond construction is rare and limited to enzymatic kinetic resolutions. Herein, we describe the enantioselective construction of chiral C(sp)-S bonds through ene-reductase biocatalyzed conjugate reduction of prochiral vinyl sulfides. A series of cooperative sequential/concurrent chemoenzymatic and biocatalytic cascades have been developed to access a broad range of chiral sulfides, including valuable β-hydroxysulfides bearing two adjacent C(sp)-S and C(sp)-O stereocentres, in a stereoconvergent manner with good to excellent yields (up to 96%) and enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee).

Effects of a Single Session of Mindfulness and Compassion on Skin Temperature in Breast Cancer Survivors.

Previous studies have suggested that mindfulness programs can be useful, in a significant sector of the population, to reduce stress when practiced for at least 8 weeks. The objective of the present investigation was to explore the effect of a single session of mindfulness practice in reducing stress in female cancer survivors. Two repeated measures studies were applied; in the first one, it was performed individually, while in the second one, it was performed in a group.

Effects of Selective and Nonselective Beta Blockers on Bone Mineral Density in Mexican Patients with Breast Cancer.

Breast cancer (BCa) is related to chronic stress and can reduce the bone mineral density (BMD) through neurochemicals related to beta-adrenergic receptor (ADRB) 1 and 2. Selective beta blockers (sBBs) and nonselective beta blockers (nsBBs) are used to treat systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) and may have osteoprotective effects, as they inhibit ADRBs. To evaluate the effects of sBBs and nsBBs on the BMD of Mexican patients with BCa.

The activity of therapeutic molecular cluster Ag5 is dependent on oxygen level and HIF-1 mediated signalling.

Regions of hypoxia occur in most solid tumours and are known to significantly impact therapy response and patient prognosis. Ag5 is a recently reported silver molecular cluster which inhibits both glutathione and thioredoxin signalling therefore limiting cellular antioxidant capacity. Ag5 treatment significantly reduces cell viability in a range of cancer cell lines with little to no impact on non-transformed cells.

Comparative Effects of and Berberine on Adipokines, Body Composition, and Metabolic Parameters in Obese Patients: A Randomized Study.

Unlabelled: (GS) and berberine (BBR) are natural products that have demonstrated therapeutic potential for the management of obesity and its comorbidities, as effective and safe alternatives to synthetic drugs. Although their anti-obesogenic and antidiabetic properties have been widely studied, comparative research on their impact on the gene expression of adipokines, such as resistin (Res), omentin (Ome), visfatin (Vis) and apelin (Ap), has not been reported.

Methodology: We performed a comparative study in 50 adult Mexican patients with obesity treated with GS or BBR for 3 months.

Purpose: Disparities in cancer care have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study is to establish how telehealth mitigated the effect of COVID-19 on the healthcare sector and to identify potential disparities in perception and experience with telehealth in cancer care during and after the pandemic.

Methods: We identified individuals with an established cancer diagnosis who received treatment at a comprehensive academic cancer center with a diverse patient population between 2019 and 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Single-cell analyses parse the brain's billions of neurons into thousands of 'cell-type' clusters residing in different brain structures. Many cell types mediate their functions through targeted long-distance projections allowing interactions between specific cell types. Here we used epi-retro-seq to link single-cell epigenomes and cell types to long-distance projections for 33,034 neurons dissected from 32 different regions projecting to 24 different targets (225 source-to-target combinations) across the whole mouse brain.

Xenotransplantation has the potential to address shortages of organs available for clinical transplantation, but concerns exist regarding potential risks posed by porcine microorganisms and parasites (MP) to the health of human recipients. In this study, a risk-based framework was developed, and expert opinion was elicited to evaluate porcine MP based on swine exposure and risk to human health. Experts identified 255 MP to include in the risk assessment.

Thymoma and Myasthenia Gravis: An Examination of a Paraneoplastic Manifestation.

Thymoma is a rare type of malignancy but is considered one of the most common neoplasms that occur in the anterior mediastinum. A large proportion of thymomas are associated with paraneoplastic syndromes, such as myasthenia gravis. Whenever feasible, the standard of care for the treatment of thymoma should focus on the control of paraneoplastic syndromes, surgical resection, and adjuvant therapy if appropriate.

Impact of COVID-19 on Cancer-Related Care in the United States: An Overview.

COVID-19 impacted several health services, including cancer-related care. Its implications were significant due to the lapse in hospital resources, compounded by the delays stemming from the economic effects on patients' jobs and medical coverage. Furthermore, reports suggesting an increased risk for morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 in patients with cancer and those on active cancer treatment caused additional fear and potential delays in seeking medical services.

Efficacy of chemotherapy in patients with HR+/HER2-Invasive lobular breast cancer.

Introduction: Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer (ILC) harbors unique clinicopathologic features. Data on optimal treatment modalities focusing on ILC remain scarce. We aim to investigate the benefit of chemotherapy in early-stage hormone receptor-positive (HR+) and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 negative (HER2-) ILC.

Merkel cell carcinoma: Epidemiology, disease presentation, and current clinical practice outcomes.

Using the National Cancer Database, we introduce the findings of a retrospective investigation of the largest cohort of cases with Merkel cell carcinoma ( = 20,829). A decreasing proportion of stage I ( = .0004) and stage II ( = 0065) Merkel cell carcinoma among skin cancers was complemented by an increasing proportion of stage III disease ( < 0001).

In this study, we assessed the value of 21-gene recurrence score (RS), or OncotypeDX (ODX), testing in HR+/HER2+ breast cancer.

Oral and Lower Extremity Ulcers as the Initial Presentation of Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis.

Background: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a small vessel vasculitis characterized by lung and kidney involvement. It is typically a disease of white females and has a poor prognosis with the average life expectancy of 5 months for a patient without treatment. Oral and skin ulcers are considered to be rare presentations.

Objectives: Describe the use and findings of cardiopulmonary imaging-chest X-ray (cX-ray), echocardiography (cEcho), chest CT (cCT), lung ultrasound (LUS), and/or cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI)-in COVID-19 hospitalizations in Latin America (LATAM).

Background: There is a lack of information on the images used and their findings during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in LATAM.

Methods: Multicenter, prospective, observational study of COVID-19 inpatients, conducted from March to December 2020, from 12 high-complexity centers, in nine LATAM countries.

Disparities in Metabolic Conditions and Cancer Characteristics among Hispanic Women with Breast Cancer: A Multi-Institutional Study.

While the associations of common metabolic conditions with ethnicity have been previously described, disparity among Hispanic individuals based on country of origin is understudied. This multi-institutional analysis explored the prevalence of metabolic conditions and their association with cancer subtypes among Mexican and non-Mexican Hispanics. After IRB approval, we conducted a cross-sectional study at two academic medical centers with a significant Hispanic patient population (Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, El Paso, TX (TTUHSC-EP) and Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, FL (CCF)).

Severe case of refractory immune thrombocytopenic purpura requiring splenectomy after the COVID-19 vaccine.

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder caused by autoantibodies against platelet antigens resulting in platelet destruction and inhibition of platelet production. Occasionally, an inciting event such as a virus or vaccination can precipitate ITP. Several cases of ITP have been reported after the BTN162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) and mRNA-1273 (Moderna) SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) vaccines.
