Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Mouthwashes based on medicinal plants have demonstrated benefits in controlling plaque and inflammation, acting positively on the oral hygiene of patients with gingivitis. In traditional medicine, Punica granatum L. has been used to treat oral diseases in countries in Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa.

Supply of Antioxidants vs. Recruit Firefighters' Cellular Immune Status: A Randomized Double-Blinded Placebo-Controlled Parallel-Group Trial.

Background: Physical exercise can affect the immune system. We studied the effect of antioxidants on hematological and immune biomarkers after heavy training. Methods: 24 well-trained and well-fed male firefighters were randomly divided into supplemented and placebo groups, and tested for immunology-related variables using venous blood samples in the fasting state, pre- (M1) and post- (M2) five weeks of daily micronutrient supplementation (15 mg of beta-carotene, 200 mg of vitamin C, 136 mg of vitamin E, 200 μg of selenium, 15 mg of zinc, 100 mg of magnesium).

Flow Cytometry as a Tool for Quality Control of Fluorescent Conjugates Used in Immunoassays.

The use of antibodies in immunodiagnostic kits generally implies the conjugation of these proteins with other molecules such as chromophores or fluorochromes. The development of more sensitive quality control procedures than spectrophotometry is essential to assure the use of better fluorescent conjugates since the fluorescent conjugates are critical reagents for a variety of immunodiagnostic kits. In this article, we demonstrate a new flow cytometric protocol to evaluate conjugates by molecules of equivalent soluble fluorochromes (MESF) and by traditional flow cytometric analysis.

The social situation of motherless children in rural and urban areas of Guinea-Bissau.

With the increasing prevalence of HIV infection and the high maternal mortality, orphans are a rapidly growing problem in Africa. However, few studies describe the social conditions of these children. Our study focuses on motherless children in urban and rural areas of Guinea-Bissau.

Maternal mortality: only 42 days?

Objective: A maternal death is defined by WHO as 'the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy em leader '. The origin of the 42 days is no longer clear. In developing countries, the burden imposed by pregnancy and birth on a woman's body may extend beyond 42 days as pregnancy-related anaemia can persist for longer and vaginal haemorrhaging and risk of infections are not necessarily over after six weeks.

Simple immunoaffinity method to purify recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen secreted by transfected mammalian cells.

Purification of recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen (recHBsAg) produced in a stable Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line was evaluated using Linx Affinity Purification System (Invitrogen, USA). To purify HBsAg secreted by this cell line, a murine monoclonal antibody (MAbAH1) raised against native HBsAg was used. The purified AH1MAb was conjugated with phenyldiboronic acid (PDBA) and immobilized on the immunoaffinity chromatographic support.
