The concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were determined in plasma samples of 20 nonoccupationally exposed subjects living in the vicinity of a new hazardous waste incinerator (HWI), now under construction in Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain). The mean PCDD/F value was 27.0 pg I-TEQ/g lipid with a range from 14.

Concentrations of 17 toxic 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) have been determined in pooled samples of breast milk from 15 mothers living in two residential areas (Tarragona downtown and an industrial area) in the vicinity of a new hazardous waste incinerator (HWI), now under construction in Tarragona (southern Catalonia, Spain). PCDD/Fs in human milk samples ranged between 5.9 and 17.

The efficacy of the Al chelating drugs deferoxamine (DFO) and the hydoxypyridones (HPs): 1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypyrid-4-one (L1), 1-[3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-oxopyridyl]-2-ethanesulfonic acid (L6), 1-benzyl-(4-carboxylic acid)-3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-oxopyridine (Bzcal) and 1-(p-methylbenzyl)-2-ethyl-3-hydroxypyrid-4-one (MeBzEM) in increasing Al excretion and reducing tissue Al accumulation has been compared in adult male rats which had previously received Al nitrate nonahydrate i.p. at 0.

Both aluminum (Al) and maternal restraint have been reported to cause developmental toxicity in mammals. This study assessed in pregnant mice the potential interaction between Al and maternal restraint. Four groups of plug-positive female mice were given IP injections of AlCl3 at 37.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were determined in 24 soil samples collected near a municipal solid waste incinerator (Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain). Soil samples were obtained at various sites within 1.5 km from the stack.

This paper is concerned with the use of digital fundus imaging to detect, quantify, and follow up macular angiographic leakage due to retinal vein occlusions. Images were matched automatically. We detected those pixels with a high increment in gray level within the closest area to the foveal center.

Tacrine (1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-9-aminoacridine), a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor, was effective in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In turn, desferrioxamine (DFO), a chelating agent with ability to chelate iron and aluminum (Al), produced a 50% decrease in the rate of cognitive decline in patients with AD. Since combined therapy with tacrine and DFO might be more effective than individual administration of these drugs for the treatment of AD patients, this study evaluated the toxic effects of concomitant administration of tacrine and DFO to rats.

The effectiveness of 2,3-dimercaptopropanol (BAL) and meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) on HgCl2-induced nephrotoxicity was studied in the rat. Seven groups of adult male rats were given a single sc toxic dose of HgCl2 (0.68 mg/kg) followed by 0.

Chelation therapy is the basis for the treatment of metal poisoning. A number of chelating agents have been widely used since the 1950s. Since these agents can be potentially given to a metal-intoxicated pregnant woman, their intrinsic developmental toxicities are a matter of concern.

In 1996, the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were determined by HRGC/HRMS in 24 vegetation samples collected in the vicinity of a municipal solid waste incinerator (Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain). In the present study 24 vegetation samples were again taken at the same sampling points and analyzed for the levels of PCDD/Fs. The results were compared with those obtained in the previous survey.

Ki-1 anaplastic large cell lymphoma is a well-described subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with distinctive characteristics from the cytological, immunohistochemical and clinical points of view. One of the clinical behavior characteristic is that it rarely evolves into a leukaemic phase. We report the case of a 72-year-old man in which the appearance of tumor cells in peripheral blood was one of the most revealing information.

The present study was conducted to assess in rats the comparative effects of a number of chelating agents on the urinary excretion and tissue distribution of A1. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats received a single intraperitoneal dose of aluminium (A1) nitrate nonahydrate (0.24 mmol/kg).

The present study was conducted to examine in rats whether the combined use of D-penicillamine (DPA) and a zinc salt, or the administration of a DPA/Zn complex could have some advantages over the use of either single agent on the excretion of copper. In a first experiment, three groups of adult male Sprague Dawley rats were given by gavage one of the following treatments for 5 days: 0.5 mmol/kg/day of DPA, 0.

In recent years, a possible relation between the aluminum and silicon levels in drinking water and the risk of Alzheimer disease (AD) has been established. It has been suggested that silicon may have a protective effect in limiting oral aluminum absorption. The present study was undertaken to examine the influence of supplementing silicon in the diet to prevent tissue aluminum retention in rats exposed to oral aluminum.

The My-10 monoclonal antibody has facilitated the search of haematopoietic stem cells by recognizing selectively the human CD34 antigen. In the present work, My-10 immunoliposomes directed specifically against CD34+ cells were prepared, characterized and tested in vitro. Binding to target cells at 4 degreesC of immunoliposomes containing carboxyfluorescein as aqueous marker was evaluated by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy.

In this article, we used PCR analysis with arbitrary primers (AP-PCR) to screen for overlapping bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones and assembly of contigs. A rice BAC library with three genome equivalents was used to prepare pooled BAC DNA. Twenty-two arbitrary primers were used to survey the pooled BAC DNAs and individual BAC DNAs.
