Technical indicators to improve municipal solid waste management in developing countries: A case in Mexico.

Nowadays, increasingly complex sets of indicators are used to compare and diagnose municipal solid waste management (MSWM). These sets incorporate new priorities regarding sustainability and focus on measuring the progress to zero waste. Nevertheless, in developing countries, where MSWM is still striving to protect health from the potential impacts of waste, the MSWM information available is scarce and of low quality.

Using indicators as a tool to evaluate municipal solid waste management: A critical review.

Indicators have been used to evaluate municipal solid waste management for several decades. This review summarizes the main groups of indicators used for this purpose, as the basis for developing a new proposal in the future. There are a number of problems (scarce or non-existent information, lack of transparency and homogeneity, among others) that prevent the methods proposed so far from being standardized and applied on a more global level.
