Isotretinoin is an analogue of vitamin A and by suppressing the sebaceous glands it is often prescribed in cases of severe acne treatment. The treatment for the average patient is carried out during two to ten months. This study was designed to investigate liver structure, hepatic enzyme levels and the stress oxidative parameter after isotretinoin treatment during a similar period and using the dosages of 1 mg/kg and another one of 10 mg/kg in young male Wistar rats.

We measured specimens, recorded the number of follicles and eggs, and removed the right ovary of each individual, which we processed according to histological routine and photo-documented. For all species, ovaries were divided into a cortical germinal bed, where oogonia and stage I oocytes are located, and a medullar stroma, where the remaining follicular developmental stages occur.

Systemic treatment has been indicated for nodular, cystic or persistent acne rather than another type of treatment, such as a topic one. Isotretinoin is an analogue of vitamin A and by suppressing the sebaceous glands the disease can be controlled.

The treatment of schistosomiasis depends on a single drug: praziquantel (PZQ). However, this treatment presents limitations such as low and/or erratic bioavailability that can contribute to cases of tolerance. Improvements to the available drug are urgently needed and studies with a controlled system of drug release, like liposomes, have been gaining prominence.

Recent population surveys have correlated cadmium non-occupational exposure to widespread idiopathic pathologies. Food and tobacco are reported to be the main exposure sources of cadmium to the general population, as phosphate fertilizers are rich in such a metal, thus contaminating the crops.

The bioconversion of the S-(-)-isomer was tested on cell permeabilisation under anaerobic conditions and using a biphasic system. When submitted to permeabilisation trials, this biocatalyst has shown a relatively high resistance; still, no production of limonene-1,2-diol and a loss of activity of the biocatalyst were observed after intense cell treatment, indicating a complete loss of cell viability.

Objectives: To assess the effect of acupuncture protocols on the ultrastructure of collagen fibrils during tendon healing.
Basal generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is essential for male reproductive function, whereas high ROS levels may be linked to low quality of sperm and male infertility. The number of antioxidants known to inflict damage is growing, and it will be of interest to study natural products, which may have this activity. Since the epididymis is known to play an important role in providing the microenvironment for sperm maturation and storage of sperm, this study was undertaken to evaluate the morphometric-stereological and functional alterations in the epididymis after chronic treatment with low doses of Brazilian green propolis, which is known for its antioxidant properties.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) still remains the most common out- GI-related condition in the out-patient setting. While primary care physicians often use empiric trials with proton pump inhibitors (PPI trial) to diagnose GERD, often specialised tests are required to confirm or exclude gastroesophageal reflux causing esophageal or extraesophageal symptoms. The most commonly used procedures to diagnose GERD include: conventional (catheter based) pH monitoring, wireless esophageal pH monitoring (Bravo), bilirubin monitoring (Bilitec), and combined multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH monitoring (MII-pH).

Purpose: To report the clinical experience with external beam radiotherapy (RT) for AIDS-related lymphoma (ARL) with or without the involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in HIV-infected patients.
Patients And Methods: Clinical outcome of 24 HIV-seropositive patients with ARL treated with RT from 1995 to 2004 was reviewed, testing factors associated with outcome.
Results: After 1 and 5 years, the overall survival was 65% and 35%, respectively.
Doxorubicin (DXR) belongs to the most efficient anticancer drugs. However, its use is limited by a risk of cardiotoxicity, which is not completely understood. Recently, we have shown that DXR impairs essential properties of purified mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK), with cardiac isoenzyme (sMtCK) being particularly sensitive.

Granulysin is endocytosed by the infected target cell via lipid rafts and kills subsequently intracellular bacteria. The mechanism by which granulysin binds to eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells but lyses only the latter is not well understood.

A comparative study of absorption spectroscopy at 100 K has been performed on three-dimensional crystals of bacteriorhodopsin extracted from a lipidic cubic phase and on native purple membrane. A modified microspectrophotometer has been designed which yields absorption data with a high signal-to-noise ratio and remarkable reproducibility. Excellent agreement of the absorption spectra of the three-dimensional crystals and the purple membrane is observed provided that a rigorous crystal-handling procedure is followed.

The combination of the spectroscopic experiments performed at room temperature, controlled pH and full external hydration reveals the presence of three distinct protein species. Besides the well-known form observed in purple membrane, we find two other species with a relative contribution of up to 30%.

In mitochondria from these transgenic mice, cyclosporin A-inhibited pore opening was delayed by creatine or cyclocreatine but not by beta-guanidinopropionic acid. This observation correlated with the ability of these substrates to stimulate state 3 respiration in the presence of extramitochondrial ATP.

A specific, direct protein-protein interaction between MtCK and mitochondrial porin was demonstrated using surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy. This interaction was independent of the immobilized binding partner (porin reconstituted in liposomes or MtCK) or the analyzed isoform (chicken sarcomeric MtCK or human ubiquitous MtCK, human recombinant porin, or purified bovine porin).

It connects sites of energy production (mitochondria, glycolysis) with sites of energy consumption (various cellular ATPases). The cellular creatine/phosphocreatine pool is linked to the ATP/ADP pool by the action of different isoforms of creatine kinase located at distinct subcellular compartments.

Very little is known about uMtCK in general, or about sMtCK of human origin. Here we have heterologously expressed and purified both human MtCK isoenzymes to perform a biochemical, kinetic and structural characterization.

Hexokinase and mitochondrial creatine kinase could be attributed by different techniques to the energy transfer contacts. Kinetic analyses suggested a functional interaction between the kinases, outer membrane pore protein, and inner membrane adenylate translocator (ANT).

Cytosolic CKs, in close conjunction with Ca(2+)-pumps, play a crucial role for the energetics of Ca(2+)-homeostasis. Mitochondrial Mi-CK, a cuboidal-shaped octamer with a central channel, binds and crosslinks mitochondrial membranes and forms a functionally coupled microcompartment with porin and adenine nucleotide translocase for vectorial export of PCr into the cytosol.

Differences between both dimeric and octameric mitochondrial creatine kinase (Mi-CK) attached to membranes and the unbound form are elaborated with respect to possible biological function. The formation of crystalline mitochondrial inclusions under pathological conditions and its possible origin in the membrane attachment capabilities of Mi-CK are discussed.
