Understanding the penetration behaviour of pesticide active ingredient (AI) in the presence of adjuvants is important in managing application efficacy and minimizing residues. This study investigates the impact of non-ionic surfactant alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs) on the penetration of two pesticides, systemic thiabendazole and non-systemic phosmet, in apple and spinach. Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) was employed using two different detection methods, namely XZ depth mapping and XY area mapping, in conjunction with liquid Chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to investigate the penetration of various pesticide formulations over time.

Research shows that when students use core concepts to guide their reasoning, they are able to construct more accurate, mechanistic explanations. However, there is scant research exploring student's perceptions of the usefulness of core concepts. Knowing students' perceptions could be influential in encouraging faculty to adopt core concept teaching strategies.

Based on the relationship between the intracellular concentration of sickle hemoglobin S (HbS) and the delay that occurs prior to the onset of sickling following deoxygenation, targeting the intracellular HbS concentration is a recognized therapeutic approach for sickle cell disease (SCD). We and others have shown that restricting iron by dietary or pharmacologic means improves hematologic parameters, inflammation, and organ damage in mouse models of SCD. Clinical evidence corroborating these findings is confined to case reports and small case series studies, none of which account for treatment or -thalassemia.

Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) toxicity has been consistently reported as a potential safety concern after delivery of adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) containing gene-replacement vectors but has yet to be reported for RNAi-based vectors. Here, we report DRG toxicity after AAV intra-CSF delivery of an RNAi expression construct-artificial microRNA targeting superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1)-in non-human primates (NHPs) and provide evidence that this can be recapitulated within mice. Histopathology evaluation showed that NHPs and mice develop DRG toxicity after AAV delivery, including DRG neuron degeneration and necrosis and nerve-fiber degeneration that were associated with increases in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain (pNF-H).

Article Synopsis
  • About one-third of US adults have tattoos, raising concerns about potential long-term health risks, including exposure to carcinogens and immune responses.
  • A case-control study comparing 820 individuals with hematologic cancers to 8200 controls found no overall strong link between tattoos and major blood cancers but revealed some associations in younger adults (ages 20-60) for rarer types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and certain myeloid neoplasms.
  • While the results were not definitive, they suggest a possible increased risk of specific hematologic cancers tied to tattooing, indicating a need for further research, especially given the high tattoo prevalence in younger adults.

Article Synopsis
  • The study discusses the limitations of using graph convolutional networks (GCN) for classifying natural language texts, particularly in terms of memory usage and distribution.
  • It introduces a new model called FastMPN, which features a message passing architecture that allows for adjustable node embeddings and edge weights, improving the GCN's problem-solving ability.
  • The FastMPN model was tested on extracting clinical data from cancer pathology reports, outperforming or matching existing models and training quickly on a large dataset using advanced hardware.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed tattoo prevalence and its association with demographic and health factors among over 18,000 Utah adults, revealing that 26% of women and 22% of men have tattoos, particularly among younger women aged 25-29.
  • The findings indicated higher tattoo prevalence among individuals with lower education, no religious affiliation, and those engaged in risky behaviors like tobacco and heavy alcohol use.
  • The study suggests that tattoo events could be leveraged for public health initiatives targeting tobacco cessation, alcohol reduction, and vaccination efforts.

With the growth of additive manufacturing (AM), there has been increasing demand for fabricating conformal electronics that directly integrate with larger components to enable unique functionality. However, fabrication of conformal electronics is challenging because devices must merge with host substrates regardless of curvilinearity, topography, or substrate material. In this work, we employ aerosol jet (AJ) printing, an AM method for jet printing electronics using ink-based materials, and a custom-made lathe mechanism for mounting flexible substrates and 3D objects on a rotating axis.

Article Synopsis
  • Precision medicine is increasingly important in cancer care, but tumor genomic data has been lacking in the National Cancer Institute's SEER Program, limiting research on molecular subtypes.
  • To improve this, the SEER Program has implemented a centralized process to link cancer cases in their registries with genomic test results from molecular labs, using specialized software and a trusted third party for data handling.
  • Recent linkages have included various OncotypeDX tests and results from other genomic classifiers, which facilitate the research community's access to valuable, de-identified data for cancer studies.

Background: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program with the National Cancer Institute tested whether population-based cancer registries can serve as honest brokers to acquire tissue and data in the SEER-Linked Virtual Tissue Repository (VTR) Pilot.

Methods: We collected formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue and clinical data from patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and breast cancer (BC) for two studies comparing cancer cases with highly unusual survival (≥5 years for PDAC and ≤30 months for BC) to pair-matched controls with usual survival (≤2 years for PDAC and ≥5 years for BC). Success was defined as the ability for registries to acquire tissue and data on cancer cases with highly unusual outcomes.
