Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system with a significant impact on mobility and balance function. Telerehabilitation is an emerging branch of telemedicine which has the potential to deliver rehabilitation remotely through the use of information and communication technology. The aim of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis is to synthesise and analyse the evidence on the effectiveness of telerehabilitation in improving mobility and balance function in MS and to determine its feasibility.

When people of any age, despite all possible support being provided, are unable to make a necessary decision, then it is important to have a legal framework which promotes and protects their rights. There is ongoing debate about how this can be achieved, in a non-discriminatory way, for adults but it is also an important consideration for children and young people. In Northern Ireland, the Mental Capacity Act (Northern Ireland) 2016, when fully implemented will provide a non-discriminatory framework for those aged 16 and over.

Purpose –: While recent years have seen a number of studies of social networks in therapeutic communities (TCs) and other residential settings, these have primarily focused on male residents. This paper aims to conduct a longitudinal social network analysis of interpersonal interactions in a TC for women.

Design/methodology/approach –: The data consists of a longitudinal directed social network of instances of feedback between 56 residents of a 16 bed TC for women over a period of 611 days.

Therapeutic communities (TCs) for substance abuse incorporate a system of peer feedback through written affirmations and corrections. Previous research has found that TC residents show a response to affirmations that is detectable for roughly 8 weeks, with response to corrections being of shorter duration and weaker overall. It is not clear whether and to what extent response to feedback in TCs varies between men and women.

This study investigated the effects of pig feed contaminated with lead (Pb) on the decomposition rate of pig carrion, identified the aerobic microorganisms and necrophagous insects associated with decomposing pig (Sus scrofa) carrion (above ground), and explored their potential use in the determination of post-mortem interval (PMI). The study profiled the decomposition of Sus scrofa carrion over a period of 40 days to record the effects of lead during decomposition. Fungi were identified by sub-culturing on prepared solidified potato dextrose agar and microbial identification was carried out using biochemical characterization.

With immunohistochemical (IHC) staining increasingly being used to guide clinical decisions, variability in staining quality and reproducibility are becoming essential factors in generating diagnoses using IHC tissue preparations. The current study tested a method to track and quantify the interrun, intrarun, and intersite variability of IHC staining intensity. Our hypothesis was that staining precision between laboratory sites, staining runs, and individual slides may be verified quantitatively, efficiently and effectively utilizing algorithm-based, automated image analysis.

Background: By September 2014, an outbreak of Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) in West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Nigeria, had recorded over 4500 and 2200 probable or confirmed cases and deaths respectively. EVD, an emerging infectious disease, can create fear and panic among patients, contacts and relatives, which could be a risk factor for psychological distress. Psychological distress among this subgroup could have public health implication for control of EVD, because of potential effects on patient management and contact tracing.

The supraoptic nucleus (SON) of the hypothalamus contains magnocellular neurosecretory neurons (MNC) which synthesize and release the peptide hormones vasopressin and oxytocin. Glutamate is a prominent excitatory neurotransmitter in the SON and regulates MNC excitability. NMDA receptors (NMDAR), a type of ionotropic glutamate receptor, mediate synaptic plasticity of MNCs and are necessary for characteristic burst firing patterns which serve to maximize hormone release.

Studies indicate that a dual pathway between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease exists. Elimination of periodontal infection by using systemic antibiotics in conjunction with scaling and root planing (SRP) improved metabolic control in diabetic patients, as defined by reduction in glycated haemoglobin or reduction in insulin requirements (Grossi and Genco, 1998). The aim of this randomised pilot clinical trial was to determine if type 1 diabetes patients with periodontitis will experience a reduction in HbA1c levels when treated with locally delivered minocycline microspheres (Arestin) as an adjunct to scaling and root planing.
