Oxidative damage due to free radical production is increased in uraemic patients and has been suggested as a possible factor contributing to the anaemia of chronic renal failure (CRF) and the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Oxidative stress was assessed in 40 patients with CRF maintained by either haemodialysis (HD) or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and in 18 healthy controls. Lipid peroxidation (assessed as malondialdehyde, MDA), total glutathione (TG), antioxidant enzyme (glutathione reductase (GSHRx), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)) activity and antioxidant associated trace metal (selenium, copper, zinc) levels were studied.

Objective: The goal of this study was to determine if ultrasonography of the endometrium could be used to identify in a noninvasive manner patients with luteal phase defects.
Study Design: Patients underwent midluteal transvaginal ultrasonography with photographing of the endometrial image, an endometrial biopsy, and two serum hormonal profiles. The ultrasonographic images were graded and compared with the histologic results and the serum hormonal profiles.

In a study of 110 Pseudomonas cepacia isolates from patients without cystic fibrosis, the in vitro potencies of three new compounds, meropenem, PD 127391, and PD 131628, were comparable to those of ceftazidime and ciprofloxacin and exceeded those of chloramphenicol and co-trimoxazole. The MICs of ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, meropenem, and the PD compounds for 90% of strains tested were < or = 4 micrograms/ml, whereas they were 32 micrograms/ml for chloramphenicol and co-trimoxazole. Data for 20 isolates from patients with cystic fibrosis indicated that the isolates were less susceptible to all seven antibiotics tested, with the most active compounds being meropenem and PD 127391.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is caused by mutations at the PKD1 locus in most families. This locus has been assigned to the short arm of chromosome 16 by linkage analysis. It has been estimated that approximately 5% of families have a disease that does not map to this locus and most of these families have clinical features indistinguishable from the disease caused by PKD1 mutations.
