Article Synopsis
  • Purpura fulminans (PF) is a serious condition that leads to blood clotting issues, causing serious skin and tissue damage.
  • A 4-year-old girl developed PF after a chickenpox infection, resulting in severe skin lesions and requiring amputation after multiple treatments over 26 weeks.
  • Vaccination against varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is crucial as it can prevent serious complications like PF, despite VZV usually causing mild illness.

Background: Data on the risk factors and outcomes for pediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are limited.

Objectives: The study aimed to analyze the clinical signs, risk factors, and outcomes for ICU admission and mortality in a large pediatric cohort who underwent allogeneic HSCT prior to COVID-19 infection.

Method: In this nationwide study, we retrospectively reviewed the data of 184 pediatric HSCT recipients who had COVID-19 between March 2020 and August 2022.

The detrimental role of institutionalization in children's development has prompted the introduction of alternative care types designed to offer more personalized care. The current study aimed to test whether children in alternative care types (care villages, care homes, and foster care) performed better on vocabulary than those in institutions. The role of temperament, specifically perceptual sensitivity and frustration, and the interaction between temperament and care types on vocabulary performance were also explored.

Introduction: Pseudohypoparathyroidism type IA (PHP1A) is characterized by end-organ resistance to multiple hormones and Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO). PHP1A is caused by inactivating mutations of the GNAS gene encoding the α-subunit of the stimulatory G protein (Gsα). In line with the underlying genetic defect, impaired inhibition of platelet aggregation has been demonstrated in some patients.

Introduction: Radiology education is essential for nonradiologist specialists and practitioners as well as for radiologists. We conducted a survey to gather the opinions of Turkish medical students from first to sixth grade regarding their radiology curricula, radiology education content, and perceptions of various imaging modalities and to assess the amount, adequacy, and homogeneity of radiology education in various schools.

Methods: Turkish medical students were reached by student ambassadors from 10 different schools of medicine via social media and email.

The St Jude Total Therapy Study XV was the first clinical trial to prospectively use minimal residual disease levels during and after remission induction therapy to guide risk-directed treatment. We used the Total Therapy XV protocol with minimal modification in treating 115 newly diagnosed pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients from low- and middle-income groups from January 2011 to December 2017. The mean age at diagnosis was 5.

Background: Given the high rates globally of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), there is a clear need to target health behaviours through person-centred interventions. Health coaching is one strategy that has been widely recognised as a tool to foster positive behaviour change. However, it has been used inconsistently and has produced mixed results.

Background: Radiology education in Turkey is mainly taught during clinical years of medical school and often lacks main principles. Exposure to the fundamentals of radiology at an early stage of medical education may drastically help students generate a better understanding of radiology and expand their interest in the specialty. With the Principles of Radiology Course that we provided, pre- and post-session tests, and assessment survey at the end of the course, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of such an online course among Turkish medical students.

Objectives: Postoperative recurrent pilonidal sinus disease is troublesome, and its treatment is a challenge. In this study, it was aimed to present the long-term efficacy of crystallized phenol treatment on postoperative recurrent pilonidal sinus disease through our results collected within the last 20 years.

Material And Methods: Two hundred and twenty-seven patients who had been previously operated on and suffered from recurrent pilonidal sinus disease were enrolled.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there was a difference between the midline skin and the healthy skin in the lateral by means of total amount of collagen and Type I/III ratio which was the indicator of the collagen structure.

Material And Methods: Fifty patients with pilonidal sinus disease were enrolled. Samples were prepared from the midline skin of the sinus where the holes were located and lateral skin of the resected material.

Despite significant advancements in behavioral science it is unclear whether behavior change techniques (or BCTs) can be delivered to large numbers of people in a cost-effective and reliable way. The current study investigated whether it is possible to reliably deliver BCTs using short text messages. Short text messages were designed to deliver each of the 93 BCTs specified in the BCT taxonomy v1.

Unlabelled: BACKGROUND AND AIM: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially life-threatening disease in children. The objective of the study is to evaluate the utility of adult-based pulmonary embolism rule-out criteria (PERC), Pediatric PE Model, and D-dimer in the diagnosis of PE in children.

Material And Methods: The study consisted of patients under 18 years of age who were consulted to the Pediatric Pulmonology Clinic for the evaluation of PE.

Article Synopsis
  • - NEMO deficiency, caused by mutations in the IKBKG gene, leads to serious immunodeficiency, making patients susceptible to recurrent infections, but also presents with severe inflammatory issues, the reasons for which are not well understood.
  • - A study on a 12-year-old male with NEMO deficiency analyzed his immune profile before and after undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), measuring responses to NF-kB activators and examining specific immune cell populations.
  • - Findings showed that even with immune deficiency, there were high levels of certain inflammatory markers and a significant presence of low-density granulocytes, indicating an abnormal immune response that normalized post-transplant, suggesting these factors may contribute to tissue damage associated with

Objective: The most important cause of posttreatment recurrence of pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is the reentry of hair into the skin. The study aimed to investigate the effect of hair removal and its duration on the prevention of recurrence after crystallized phenol treatment.

Subject And Methods: Patients with PSD who were treated with crystallized phenol treatment were evaluated.

With the aid of neural networks, this article develops two data-driven designs of fault detection (FD) for dynamic systems. The first neural network is constructed for generating residual signals in the so-called finite impulse response (FIR) filter-based form, and the second one is designed for recursively generating residual signals. By theoretical analysis, we show that two proposed neural networks via self-organizing learning can find their optimal architectures, respectively, corresponding to FIR filter and recursive observer for FD purposes.

Introduction: The lymphoid enhancer factor 1 (LEF1) is a DNA-binding transcription factor that functions in the Wnt signaling pathway. Increased LEF1 activity is associated with progression of several types of cancer including leukemia. Here, we investigated LEF1 isoform expression and genomic variations in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Background: Oxygen therapy provided via high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) improves gas exchange lung compliance and results in increased lung expiratory volumes. Previous data indicate that hyperbaric and humid states improve the olfactory thresholds compared to hypobaric and dry conditions. This prospective, observational study aimed to determine the impact of oxygen delivery through HFNC on olfactory function in subjects admitted to the ICU for acute respiratory failure (ARF).
