Tethered vagina syndrome is an iatrogenic, but poorly defined condition that usually develops after surgical procedures performed on the anterior vaginal wall. Loss of elasticity as a result of scarring in the bladder neck-urethra is blamed for its pathogenesis. Patients often present with typical, massive uncontrollable urine loss and have specific examination findings.

Soil Sample Analysis of Contaminated Animal Burial Sites.

Environmental contamination with spores poses clear threats to livestock that play key roles in the economies of pastoral communities. Regular monitoring of contaminated sites is particularly important in anthrax-endemic parts of the world, such as Kars province in eastern Türkiye, where the Veterinary Microbiology Department of Kafkas University has conducted an anthrax surveillance programme for over 30 years. We reviewed the microbiological results of 232 soil samples collected during 2009-2023, from sites known to be contaminated with spores following burial or butchering of infected animal carcasses.

A novel suturing technique for natural tissue repair in cystocele treatment.

Background: Recently, natural tissue repair has become popular in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapsed. In this study, we compared patients who underwent cystocele repair with the rug-weaving plication technique, a natural tissue repair method implemented since 2022 for anterior prolapse, with those treated using conventional colporrhaphy.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 65 patients who underwent anterior vaginal wall repair with the rug-weaving plication technique (n = 33, Group 1) or conventional colporrhaphy (n = 32, Group 2).

Nutrition for the older adult - Current concepts. Report from an ESPEN symposium.

Background & Aims: In view of the global demographic shift, a scientific symposium was organised by the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) to address nutrition-related challenges of the older population and provide an overview of the current state of knowledge.

Methods: Eighteen nutrition-related issues of the ageing global society were presented by international experts during the symposium and summarised in this report.

Results: Anorexia of ageing, dysphagia, malnutrition, frailty, sarcopenia, sarcopenic obesity, and the metabolic syndrome were highlighted as major nutrition-related geriatric syndromes.

AMPLON: Amplifying DNA with Multiarm Priming and Looping Optimization of Nucleic Acid.

Nucleic acid amplification, the bedrock of biotechnology and molecular diagnostics, surges in applications-especially isothermal approaches-heightening the demand for advanced and precisely engineered methods. Here, a novel approach for amplifying DNA with multiarm priming and looping optimization of nucleic acid (AMPLON) is presented. AMPLON relies on a novel polymeric material with unique set of multiarm polyethylene glycol-DNA primers for efficient DNA amplification under isothermal conditions.

Clinicians are in need of guidance that will ease the application of medical nutrition therapy. The pre- and post-graduate curriculum for medical nutrition therapy is limited in most regions, worldwide.

Enteral nutrition consensus report from KEPAN: Indications, choice, practical application, and follow-up.

Objectives: Clinicians are in need of guidance that will ease the application of medical nutrition therapy. In order to facilitate the application and success of medical nutrition therapy, the Turkish Clinical Enteral & Parenteral Nutrition Society (KEPAN) planned a report that is short, is clear, and has clear-cut recommendations that will guide health care professionals in the indications, choice, practical application, follow-up, and stopping of enteral nutrition.

Methods: The enteral nutrition consensus report on enteral nutrition use in medical nutrition therapy was developed by a study group (12 working group academicians and 17 expert group academicians) under the organization of KEPAN.

3D Printed Materials for Combating Antimicrobial Resistance.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a rapidly growing technology with a significant capacity for translational applications in both biology and medicine. 3D-printed living and non-living materials are being widely tested as a potential replacement for conventional solutions for testing and combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The precise control of cells and their microenvironment, while simulating the complexity and dynamics of an environment, provides an excellent opportunity to advance the modeling and treatment of challenging infections and other health conditions.

Accreditation of nutrition support teams: A new initiative by the Turkish Society of Clinical Enteral & Parenteral Nutrition.

Objectives: Accreditation is a process to evaluate compliance of an institution or organization with predetermined performance standards, focusing on achieving continuous improvement strategies and optimal quality standards and motivating the accredited organization to do so. There is no established accreditation program for nutrition support teams (NSTs) at national and international levels. In order to increase the standards of NSTs, developing an accreditation program is being planned by the Turkish Society of Clinical Enteral & Parenteral Nutrition (KEPAN).

Role of serum renalase levels in predicting the presence of metabolic syndrome in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Objective: This study was designed to compare the serum renalase levels of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) women with and without metabolic syndrome (MS) and those of healthy non-PCOS women.

Materials And Methods: Seventy-two patients diagnosed with PCOS and age-matched 72 healthy non-PCOS were included in the study. The PCOS group was divided into two groups as having metabolic syndrome or not.

Impact of HLA Polymorphism on the Immune Response to Bacillus Anthracis Protective Antigen in Vaccination versus Natural Infection.

The causative agent of anthrax, Bacillus anthracis, evades the host immune response and establishes infection through the production of binary exotoxins composed of Protective Antigen (PA) and one of two subunits, lethal factor (LF) or edema factor (EF). The majority of vaccination strategies have focused upon the antibody response to the PA subunit. We have used a panel of humanised HLA class II transgenic mouse strains to define HLA-DR-restricted and HLA-DQ-restricted CD4+ T cell responses to the immunodominant epitopes of PA.

The Effect of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells on the Mortality of Patients with Sepsis and Septic Shock: A Promising Therapy.

Objective(s): To compare the presence and severity of striae gravidarum in pregnant women with and without stress urinary incontinence and to evaluate whether there is a relationship between the severity of striae gravidarum and the severity of incontinence in pregnant women with stress urinary incontinence.

Study Design: Healthy primigravid pregnant women with an uneventful singleton pregnancy at 36-37 weeks of gestation were included. All women were asked two questions to assess the presence of urinary incontinence.

The role of trimetazidine in ischemia/reperfusion damage treatment in an ovary torsion model experimentally induced in rats.

The aim of this experimental animal study was to investigate the histopathological and biochemical efficacy of trimetazidine (TMZ) in decreasing ovary damage in an ovary ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) model in the rat. A total of 35 Wistar albino female rats were randomly separated into five groups,  = 7 per group: Group 1: Sham (S) was only given a laparotomy procedure. Group 2: Ischaemia (I) group with 2-hour ischaemia using a vascular sutur.

Objective: To evaluate the anatomical results of Manchester Fothergill operation performed due to cervical elongation cases without uterine descensus and its effects on quality of life and sexual function.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-six women who underwent Manchester Fothergill operation for cervical elongation without uterine descensus were analyzed retrospectively. Pre- and postoperative Pelvic Organ Prolapse-Quantification (POP-Q) measurements, Prolapse Quality of Life (P-QoL) Questionnaire and Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire-12 (PISQ-12) scores were collected.
