Background: Systemic inflammatory response after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is thought to result from contact of cellular and humoral blood components with the synthetic material of the extracorporeal circulation system, leukocyte and endothelial activation caused by ischemia and reperfusion or endotoxins, or by surgical trauma. Proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-8, play an important role in the inflammatory processes after CPB and may induce cardiac and lung dysfunction. This study examined the association of the increased release of TNF-alpha with increased myocardial and lung injury after CPB and its effect on postoperative morbidity.

Introduction: Catheter- or noncatheter-related peripheral arterial complications such as arterial pseudoaneurysm, embolus, or arteriovenous fistula may be seen in the pediatric age group. The most common etiologies defined for arterial complications are peripheral arterial puncture performed for a routine arterial blood gas analysis, arterial catheters placed for invasive monitorization of children, or catheterization performed for diagnostic purposes through the peripheral arterial system, most commonly the femoral artery.

Materials And Methods: Nine children with peripheral arterial complications, whose ages varied between 2 months and 2.

Pulmonary stenosis (PS) can be seen from the right ventricular outflow tract to the peripheral pulmonary arteries. Most frequently, the obstruction occurs at the level of the pulmonary valve; however, it occurs less frequently at the infindibular level within the trabecular component of the right ventricle or within the pulmonary arterial pathways. Lesions at any of these levels can occur as part of more congenital cardiac malformations such as tetralogy of Fallot, complete transposition of great arteries, or atrial septal defect.

Objective: Currently, internal thoracic arteries (ITA) and radial arteries (RA) are the first choice of conduits for coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG). Because the perioperative vasospasm continues to be a major problem, a number of pharmacologic agents such as papaverine, calcium receptor blockers, nitroglycerine, and phenoxybenzamine have been suggested as topical antispasmodics that may be used in the pre- and postoperative periods. In the present study, we investigated the quantitative efficacies of the mixed solution, which included verapamil, nitroglycerin, and papaverine, on RA and ITA using a scanning electron microscope with a 3-dimensional anaglyph technique.

Free radicals and oxidative stress are involved in the pathogenesis of various diseases. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a natural product of lipid peroxidation in all mammalian cells. Vitamins C and E are nonenzymatic antioxidant structures.

Although ring avulsion injuries are not common, when they do occur their management is still a challenging problem in reconstructive surgery. In this report, we present our microsurgical experiences with Kay's class III and IV ring avulsion injuries. A total of six patients with ring avulsion injuries were operated on between 2000 and 2004.

Background: Imbalance in autonomic nervous system and impaired myocardial repolarization has been shown to increase the risk for arrhythmias in patients with coronary artery disease. This study evaluated the effects of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on heart rate variability and QT interval dynamicity in subjects with coronary artery disease undergoing elective CABG surgery.

Methods: The study group consisted of 68 consecutive patients (mean age +/-SD: 61 +/- 9 years) with coronary artery disease who underwent elective CABG.

Purpose: The main goal of this retrospective study was to re-evaluate all available records of clinical and laboratory data of patients with tuberculosis (TB) in Sivas province, Middle Anatolia, Turkey.

Methods: TB registration data held at health institutions in Sivas province were compared and matched with data obtained from the local official TB registries from January 2000 to December 2001.

Results: Of the 536 TB cases found in 2000 and 2001, 255 (47.

Background And Aim: There are few reports about injury to forearm nerves and its potential mechanisms during radial artery (RA) harvesting. We studied electrophysiologic changes in these nerves not sought until now.

Methods: Among 152 consecutive patients who underwent coronary artery bypass surgery between February 2002 and August 2002, 20 were randomized for RA harvesting and formed the study group and 20 were randomized as control group.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) among university students in a rural area of Turkey and to compare groups based on the sociodemographic data, history of child abuse and neglect, family roles and self-esteem with a normal control group regarding EDs.

Method: Subjects who were chosen by simple random sampling method were consisted of 980 Cumhuriyet University students who agreed to participate out of the 1003 total students and were given a sociodemographic information form and an Eating Attitudes Test (EAT). Students who scored above a cutoff level on the EAT were interviewed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV axis I Disorders (SCID-I), Clinical Version.

Purpose: To investigate the effectiveness of silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses for therapeutic applications.

Methods: The study included 37 patients who had bullous keratopathy (n=12), recurrent corneal erosion (n=9), filamentous keratitis (n=3), corneal melting after corneal surgery (n=4), lamellar lacerations (n=4), or chemical trauma (n=5) and were fitted with silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses between May 2000 and August 2003 in First Eye Clinic of Kartal Training and Research Hospital. Changes in corneal signs by slitlamp evaluation, judgment of pain relief, additional complications, and success of therapeutic lens treatment were reported.

A pseudoaneurysm is defined as an aneurysmatic sac surrounded byfibrous tissue instead of other vascular layers such as the muscular one. It is a rare incident in infants especially in the brachial artery. Blunt trauma and vascular access attempts are the most common etiologic factors.

Perigraft seroma is a collection of non-secretory fibrous pseudomembrane surrounding a vascular graft, which is a collection of clear, sterile fluid. Thoracal computed tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and thoracal ultrasonography have been proposed for diagnosis of this pathology. A consecutive modified Blalock-Taussig (m-BT) shunt complicated by perigraft seroma formation, which is diagnosed using a Doppler ultrasonography (US), is presented here.

Objectives: The effectiveness of open reduction and plate fixation combined with autogenous bone grafting was assessed in the treatment of humeral diaphysis pseudarthrosis.

Methods: Twenty-four patients (16 men, 8 women; mean age 44 years; range 28 to 64 years) were operated on for humeral pseudarthrosis. Of these, 16 patients and eight patients had had previous surgical and conservative treatments, respectively.

Double orifice mitral valve (DOMV) is an uncommon congenital heart defect. The isolated occurrence of this anomaly is very rare and, more often, is associated with another congenital malformation, dominated by atrioventricular canal defects (AVCD). Mitral insufficiency and/or stenosis may complicate this malformation.
