Cocoa-growing areas in Ghana have experienced a rise in mining activities affecting cocoa cultivation and increased concentrations of potentially toxic metals in the soil, which can accumulate in cocoa beans. This study evaluated potential toxic metal contamination in cocoa beans and soils from cocoa farms in mining and non-mining areas in Ghana. We used X-ray fluorescence and an ICP-MS to determine metal concentrations, and a Zeeman mercury analyzer to determine mercury.

The estimated absorbed dose for soil from Amansie, Konongo, and Mampong were 206 nGy/h, 224 nGy/h and 198 nGy/h, respectively, which were all above 60 nGy/h set by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation. The soil-to-plant transfer factors (TF) for ³⁸U, ³Th, and ⁴⁰K ranged from 0.

Our study investigated information communication and overload in 380 parents of children undergoing any elective surgical procedure at our institution. Participants completed an online questionnaire and were asked to respond to a newly designed Information Overload scale based on a modified 5 item Cancer Information Overload Scale and an 8-item atrial fibrillation information overload scale.

Ageing can induce cardiac metabolic alterations, but the role of PPARα has not been extensively characterised. The aim of this research was to investigate the role of PPARα in the aged heart.

This study aimed to illuminate prehospital emergency nurses' (PENs') experiences of caring for patients with suspected acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
Design: A qualitative interview study.
Background: Grasslands are essential for providing vital resources in the livestock sector and delivering invaluable ecosystem services such as biodiversity and soil carbon (C) sequestration. Despite their critical importance, these ecosystems face escalating threats from human disturbances, human degradation, and climate change, compromising their ability to effectively stock C. Restoring degraded grasslands emerges as a pragmatic and cost-effective approach to tackling climate change.

Multi-nuclear MRS and MRI techniques have the potential to provide a comprehensive non-invasive assessment of cardiac metabolic perturbation in obesity. A rat model of obesity was created by high-fat diet feeding.

This study investigated the concentrations and potential health effects of metal content in the topsoils of Obuasi municipality, which has been mined for gold over the past century. Surface topsoil samples, sieved to 250 µm, were initially scanned for metals using x-ray fluorescence techniques, followed by confirmation via ICP-MS.

Using data from the randomized controlled trial, TB-PRACTECAL, we investigated differences in QTcF among participants in the three interventional arms: BPaL (bedaquiline, pretomanid, and linezolid), BPaLC (BPaL with clofazimine), and BPaLM (BPaL with moxifloxacin). Additionally, we assessed whether age, body mass index, and country were causally associated with QTcF prolongation.

Objectives: This study sought to identify the impact of complete revascularization in patients with severe LV dysfunction.
Methods: Patients enrolled in the REVIVED-BCIS2 (Revascularization for Ischemic Ventricular Dysfunction) trial were eligible if baseline/procedural angiograms and viability studies were available for analysis by independent core laboratories.
Background: In the REVIVED-BCIS2 (Revascularization for Ischemic Ventricular Dysfunction) trial, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) did not reduce the incidence of death or hospitalization for heart failure (HHF).
Objectives: This prespecified secondary analysis investigated the effect of PCI on health status measured with the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) combined with the primary outcome in a win ratio.
Methods: Participants with severe ischemic left ventricular dysfunction were randomized to either PCI in addition to optimal medical therapy (OMT) (PCI) or OMT alone (OMT).
Background: Non-inferiority trials comparing different active drugs are often subject to treatment non-adherence. Intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) analyses have been advocated in such studies but are not guaranteed to be unbiased in the presence of differential non-adherence.
Methods: The REMoxTB trial evaluated two 4-month experimental regimens compared with a 6-month control regimen for newly diagnosed drug-susceptible TB.
Currently available biotherapeutics for the treatment of osteoporosis lack explicit mechanisms for bone localization, potentially limiting efficacy and inducing off-target toxicities. While various strategies have been explored for targeting the bone surface, critical aspects remain poorly understood, including the optimal affinity ligand, the role of binding avidity and circulation time, and, most importantly, whether or not this strategy can enhance the functional activity of clinically relevant protein therapeutics. To investigate, we generated fluorescent proteins (eg, mCherry) with site-specifically attached small molecule (bisphosphonate) or peptide (deca-aspartate, D10) affinity ligands.

This can cause harm and limit the quality of revascularization achieved, especially when left ventricular function is impaired at the outset. Elective percutaneous left ventricular unloading is increasingly used to mitigate adverse events in patients undergoing high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention, but this strategy has fiscal and clinical costs and is not supported by robust evidence.

In this study, we assessed the suitability of using a standard reference material (SRM) other than National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 2710a or NIST 2711a in USEPA Method 1340 to determine arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in vitro bioaccessibility (IVBA) and the capabilities of Canadian-based laboratories to perform the method. Five laboratories participated in an initial round robin study and analyzed NIST 2710a, NIST 2711a, BGS119, and Enviromat SS-2. Intra- and inter-laboratory variability were generally acceptable with percentage relative standard deviations (RSD) of less than 20%.

As such, the purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which metacognitive accuracy predicts QoL in individuals with TBI.
Methods: Eighteen participants with moderate-to-severe TBI completed a stimulus-response task requiring the discrimination of emotions depicted in pictures of faces and then provided a retrospective confidence judgment after each response.
Background & Aims: Long-term studies of the prognosis of NAFLD are scarce. Here, we investigated the risk of major adverse liver outcomes (MALO) in a large cohort of patients with NAFLD.
Methods: We conducted a cohort study with data from Swedish university hospitals.
Background: Around 500 000 people worldwide develop rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis each year. The proportion of successful treatment outcomes remains low and new treatments are needed. Following an interim analysis, we report the final safety and efficacy outcomes of the TB-PRACTECAL trial, evaluating the safety and efficacy of oral regimens for the treatment of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis.

The REVIVED (Revascularization for Ischemic Ventricular Dysfunction)-BCIS2 (British Cardiovascular Society-2) trial concluded that PCI did not reduce the incidence of all-cause death or heart failure hospitalization; however, patients assigned to PCI reported better initial health-related quality of life than those assigned to optimal medical therapy (OMT) alone. The aim of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of PCI+OMT compared with OMT alone.
