Despite the psychological challenges that dementia creates, comparatively little attention has been paid to how individuals or families can be helped to adjust to dementia. One of the few interventions to do this is the Living well with Dementia (LivDem) post-diagnostic course. LivDem focuses on supporting individuals to talk more openly about their dementia.

Sexual and gender diverse (SGD) adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors are an increasing and vulnerable group with unique needs that often remain unmet in the healthcare system. This paper describes the conceptualization and development of a community-based organization dedicated to serving SGD AYAs, in addition to reporting on the results of a community-led needs assessment. A total of 56 SGD AYA community members completed the online survey.

Hematin anhydride (β-hematin): An analogue to malaria pigment hemozoin possesses nonlinearity.

Hematin anhydride (β-hematin), the synthetic analogue of the malaria pigment, "hemozoin", is a heme dimer produced by reciprocal covalent bonds among carboxylic acid groups on the protoporphyrin-IX ring and the iron atom present in the two adjacent heme molecules. Hemozoin is a disposal product formed from the digestion of hemoglobin present in the red blood cells infected with hematophagous malaria parasites. Besides, as the parasites invade red blood cells, hemozoin crystals are eventually released into the bloodstream, where they accumulate over time in tissues.

Soluble meso and deuteroporphyrin analogs of the malaria pigment hematin anhydride.

Two soluble heme analogs of the insoluble malaria pigment hematin anhydride (HA, or β-hematin), [Fe(III)(protoporphyrin)], with either mesoporphyrin (MHA) or deuteroporphyrin (DHA) are characterized by elemental analysis, SEM, IR spectroscopy, electronic spectroscopy, paramagnetic H NMR spectroscopy and solution magnetic susceptibility. While prior single crystal and X-ray powder diffraction results indicate all three have a common propionate linked dimer motif, there is considerable solid state variation in the conformation. This is associated with enhanced solubility of MHA and DHA.

NsrR from Streptomyces coelicolor is a bacterial nitric oxide (NO) sensor/nitrosative stress regulator as its primary function, and has been shown to have differential response at low, mid, and high levels of NO. These must correspond to discrete structural changes at the protein-bound [4Fe-4S] cluster in response to stepwise nitrosylation of the cluster. We have investigated the effect of the monohapto carboxylate ligand in the site differentiated [4Fe-4S] cluster cofactor of the protein NsrR on modulating its reactivity to NO with a focus on indentifying mechanistic intermediates.

Multi-breed genomic evaluation for tropical beef cattle when no pedigree information is available.

Background: It has been challenging to implement genomic selection in multi-breed tropical beef cattle populations. If commercial (often crossbred) animals could be used in the reference population for these genomic evaluations, this could allow for very large reference populations. The Opacity Platform on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been developed to measure opacities at varying densities and temperatures relevant to the solar interior and thermal cooling rates in white dwarf stars. The typical temperatures reached at NIF range between 150 and 210 eV, which allow these measurements to be performed experimentally. The captured opacities are crucial to validating radiation-hydrodynamic models that are used in astrophysics.

Nasopulmonary mites (NPMs) of the family Halarachnidae are obligate endoparasites that colonize the respiratory tracts of mammals. NPMs damage surface epithelium resulting in mucosal irritation, respiratory illness, and secondary infection, yet the role of NPMs in facilitating pathogen invasion or dissemination between hosts remains unclear. Using 16S rRNA massively parallel amplicon sequencing of six hypervariable regions (or "16S profiling"), we characterized the bacterial community of NPMs from 4 southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis).

The effect of anaesthetic use on healing in sub cutaneous abscess management: a retrospective before and after cohort study.

Introduction: There is wide variation in the management of simple subcutaneous abscesses in the UK and no national guidelines describing best practice. During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, regional or local anaesthesia (LA) use was recommended instead of general anaesthesia. This study aimed to assess the effect of anaesthetic use on outcomes following incision and drainage (I&D) of simple subcutaneous abscesses.

The Importance of Partnership in the Rollout of Triple-Drug Therapy to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis in the Pacific.

We discuss the experience of some Pacific island countries in introducing the new WHO-recommended treatment protocol for lymphatic filariasis-a triple-drug therapy composed of ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine, and albendazole. The successful rollout of the new treatment protocol was dependent on strong partnerships among these countries' ministries of health, WHO, and other stakeholders. Effective communication among these partners allowed for lessons learned to cross borders and have a positive impact on the experiences of other countries.

Nostalgic conversations: The co-production of an intervention package for people living with dementia and their spouse.

Objectives: Nostalgic memories are more social than other forms of autobiographical recall, often refer to atypical events, express more positive affect and reflect life as meaningful. Recalling a nostalgic (compared to ordinary) memory increases self-esteem, self-growth, meaning in life and social connectedness for people living with dementia. We set two objectives: to work with people living with dementia to develop an intervention based on nostalgia, and to assess whether couples could engage in nostalgic conversations.

Socioeconomic disparities in cancer incidence and mortality in England and the impact of age-at-diagnosis on cancer mortality.

Background: We identify socioeconomic disparities by region in cancer morbidity and mortality in England for all-cancer and type-specific cancers, and use incidence data to quantify the impact of cancer diagnosis delays on cancer deaths between 2001-2016.

Methods And Findings: We obtain population cancer morbidity and mortality rates at various age, year, gender, deprivation, and region levels based on a Bayesian approach. A significant increase in type-specific cancer deaths, which can also vary among regions, is shown as a result of delay in cancer diagnoses.

The Content of Nostalgic Memories Among People Living with Dementia.

Although dementia may affect the reliability of autobiographical memories, the psychological properties of nostalgic memories may be preserved. We compared the content of nostalgic ( = 36) and ordinary ( = 31) narratives of 67 participants living with dementia. Narratives were rated according to their self-oriented, social, and existential properties, as well as their affective content.

DANTE as a primary temperature diagnostic for the NIF iron opacity campaign.

The Opacity Platform on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been developed to measure iron opacities at varying densities and temperatures relevant to the solar interior and to verify recent experimental results obtained at the Sandia Z-machine, that diverge from theory. The first set of NIF experiments collected iron opacity data at ∼150 eV to 160 eV and an electron density of ∼7 × 10 cm, with a goal to study temperatures up to ∼210 eV, with electron densities of up to ∼3 × 10 cm. Among several techniques used to infer the temperature of the heated Fe sample, the absolutely calibrated DANTE-2 filtered diode array routinely provides measurements of the hohlraum conditions near the sample.

Exposure to domoic acid is an ecological driver of cardiac disease in southern sea otters.

Harmful algal blooms produce toxins that bioaccumulate in the food web and adversely affect humans, animals, and entire marine ecosystems. Blooms of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia can produce domoic acid (DA), a toxin that most commonly causes neurological disease in endothermic animals, with cardiovascular effects that were first recognized in southern sea otters. Over the last 20 years, DA toxicosis has caused significant morbidity and mortality in marine mammals and seabirds along the west coast of the USA.

Influences of claywater and greenwater on the skin microbiome of cultured larval sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria).

Background: The skin microbiome of marine fish is thought to come from bacteria in the surrounding water during the larval stages, although it is not clear how different water conditions affect the microbial communities in the water and, in turn, the composition and development of the larval skin microbiome. In aquaculture, water conditions are especially important; claywater and greenwater are often used in larval rearing tanks to increase water turbidity. Here, we explored the effects of these water additives on microbial communities in rearing water and on the skin of first-feeding sablefish larvae using 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

The mnemic neglect effect and information about dementia: age differences in recall.

Dementia represents a more immediate threat for older than for younger adults. Consequently, different strategies may be used to defend the self against the threat of dementia. We hypothesised that older (compared to younger) adults are more likely to manifest mnemic neglect (in which information that is threatening to the self is selectively forgotten) to reduce distress for dementia-related information.

Dementia services for people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic and White-British communities: Does a primary care based model contribute to equality in service provision?

This study set out to investigate whether there were disparities in service provision for people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities compared to White British (WB) communities within a primary care led dementia service in the UK. Data were extracted from 30 cases from three BAME (African-Caribbean, South Asian and Chinese) communities who had been referred to a dementia service between April 2016 and December 2017. We then extracted data from 30 WB cases matched for gender, age (within 5 years) and General Practitioner surgery.
