Clinical Presentation of Frontal Sinus Squamous Cell Carcinoma in the Dog and Response to Treatment With Radiation Therapy in Eight Dogs.

Primary frontal sinus squamous cell carcinoma (PFSSCC) represents a rare disease in dogs, and there is a general paucity of information in the current veterinary literature regarding its presentation and response to radiation therapy. The objective of this retrospective observational study was to describe a series of dogs diagnosed with PFSSCC and report their response to radiation therapy. Medical records of dogs with a diagnosis of PFSSCC were reviewed.

FDG uptake of pulmonary lesions in synchronous primary lung cancers and lung metastases.

Purpose: In lung cancer patients, the distinction between synchronous primary lung cancer and intrapulmonary metastasis can be challenging. The intensity of FDG uptake in pulmonary lesions has been shown to be potentially useful in classifying synchronous lung cancer. The aim of this retrospective study is to investigate the effectiveness of FDG uptake in differentiating metastases from synchronous primary lesions in the setting of lung cancer.

Disrupted Endoplasmic Reticulum Ca Handling: A Harβinger of β-Cell Failure.

The β-cell workload increases in the setting of insulin resistance and reduced β-cell mass, which occurs in type 2 and type 1 diabetes, respectively. The prolonged elevation of insulin production and secretion during the pathogenesis of diabetes results in β-cell ER stress. The depletion of β-cell Ca during ER stress activates the unfolded protein response, leading to β-cell dysfunction.

Despite their evolutionary novelty, lizard venoms are much less studied in comparison to the intense research on snake venoms. While the venoms of helodermatid lizards have long been assumed to be for defensive purposes, there is increasing evidence of toxic activities more useful for predation than defence (such as paralytic neurotoxicity). This study aimed to ascertain the effects of , , and lizard venoms on the coagulation and cardiovascular systems.

Vinblastine/prednisolone chemotherapy leads to hematological toxicity in dogs with high-grade or metastatic mast cell tumors.

Objective: To determine the myelosuppressive effects/hematological toxicities, other general toxicities, and when these occur during vinblastine/prednisolone chemotherapy in dogs bearing high-grade or metastatic cutaneous/subcutaneous mast cell tumors (MCTs).

Methods: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed between November 1, 2016, and March 1, 2023. Thirty client-owned dogs with histopathologically confirmed cutaneous high-grade MCTs/metastatic subcutaneous MCTs and that subsequently completed a 12-week vinblastine/prednisolone chemotherapy protocol were included.

Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) are used as catalysts for a diverse range of industrial applications. Currently, Au-NPs are synthesized chemically, but studies have shown that plants fed Au deposit, this element naturally as NPs within their tissues. We must better understand the foot type classifications of netball players to develop sex and size-specific shoe lasts. Five hundred and two representative-level netball players ( = 251 male;  = 251 female) had their feet three-dimensionally scanned. A validated MATLAB code was used to extract six different foot measurements from these scans automatically.

Objectives: The most efficient way to adjust skeletal muscle area (SMA) derived from chest CT to body size remains unclear. We hypothesized that vertebral body area (VBA) measurement would allow such efficient adjustment.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study of chest CT imaging in a cohort of critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Mitochondrial Ca ([Ca]) homeostasis is critical for β-cell function and becomes disrupted during the pathogenesis of diabetes. [Ca] uptake is dependent on elevations in cytoplasmic Ca ([Ca]) and endoplasmic reticulum Ca ([Ca]) release, both of which are regulated by the two-pore domain K channel TALK-1. Here, utilizing a novel β-cell TALK-1-knockout (β-TALK-1-KO) mouse model, we found that TALK-1 limited β-cell [Ca] accumulation and ATP production.

T-cell lymphoma involving the rectum of a dog.

A mediastinal mass was diagnosed in a 7-year-4-month-old neutered female mixed breed dog following a 3-week history of lethargy, hyporexia and pyrexia. Bi-cavitary imaging, needle aspirate cytology and flow cytometry confirmed WHO clinical stage IVb, intermediate to large T-cell lymphoma involving the mediastinum, liver and spleen. The dog initially responded to a multidrug chemotherapy protocol but clinical deterioration occurred 3 months later.

The dispersion component of the van der Waals interaction in low-dimensional metals is known to exhibit anomalous "Type-C non-additivity" [ 1157]. This causes dispersion energy behavior at asymptotically large separations that is missed by popular atom-based schemes for dispersion energy calculations. For example, the dispersion interaction energy between parallel metallic nanotubes at separation falls off asymptotically as approximately , whereas current atom-based schemes predict asymptotically.

This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60 live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t.

Sarcoma Predisposition in Dogs with a Comparative View to Human Orthologous Disease.

Sarcomas are malignant tumors arising from the embryonic mesodermal cell lineage. This group of cancers covers a heterogenous set of solid tumors arising from soft tissues or bone. Many features such as histology, biological behavior and molecular characteristics are shared between sarcomas in humans and dogs, suggesting that human sarcoma research can be informative for canine disease, and that dogs with sarcomas can serve as relevant translational cancer models, to aid in the understanding of human disease and cancer biology.

A Cadaveric Evaluation of Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy.

Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) describes a pathologic state in which the subaortic region of the interventricular septum undergoes significant hypertrophy and fibrosis, resulting in septal bowing into the left ventricle. The reduced left ventricular chamber size and altered cardiac function impair diastolic filling, stroke volume, and cardiac output. This case report evaluates the cardiac tissue of a 36-year-old, formalin-embalmed cadaver affected by HOCM, with the goal of providing a comprehensive overview of the gross and pathologic findings associated with the condition.
