Promoting health information system in guiding decisions for improving performance: an intervention study at the Research Institute of Ophthalmology, Giza, Egypt.

Objectives: This study aims to design and test a platform of key performance indicators (KPIs) and indices emphasizing achievements and improvement and helping decision-making.

Methods: An operations research study was designed to analyze data from the Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) from July 2017 to June 2018 at the Research Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), Giza, Egypt. The HMIS data were submitted to reform covering parameters in service delivery and corresponding indicators and indices.

Effect of branched-chain amino acid supplementation and exercise on quadriceps muscle quantity and quality in patients with cirrhosis as assessed by ultrasonography: A randomized controlled trial.

Background/aim: Sarcopenia and myosteatosis are common in patients with cirrhosis. The study aimed to evaluate efficacy of ultrasound to monitor muscle status during branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation and/or muscle exercise interventional approaches.

Patients And Methods: A randomized controlled study, included 220 liver cirrhosis patients with Child- Pugh B and C, randomized into a control group (55 patients) received only the standard care, and interventional groups (165 patients) equally distributed into three subgroups, in addition to standard care, they received BCAA, programmed exercise, or BCAA and programmed exercise.

SPI-1 virulence gene expression modulates motility of Salmonella Typhimurium in a proton motive force- and adhesins-dependent manner.

Both the bacterial flagellum and the evolutionary related injectisome encoded on the Salmonella pathogenicity island 1 (SPI-1) play crucial roles during the infection cycle of Salmonella species. The interplay of both is highlighted by the complex cross-regulation that includes transcriptional control of the flagellar master regulatory operon flhDC by HilD, the master regulator of SPI-1 gene expression. Contrary to the HilD-dependent activation of flagellar gene expression, we report here that activation of HilD resulted in a dramatic loss of motility, which was dependent on the presence of SPI-1.

Background: Pain is the most incapacitating symptom of knee osteoarthritis (OA), with intermittent and/or continuous nature as described by the patients. Accuracy of pain assessment tools across different cultures is important. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Intermittent and Constant OsteoArthritis Pain (ICOAP) measure into Arabic (ICOAP-Ar) and evaluate its psychometric properties in patients with knee OA.

Transfusion transmitted virus and dengue virus among healthy blood donors: A prevalence report from Jordan.

Transfusion transmitted virus (TTV) is thought to contribute to non-A non-E hepatitis and other diseases. Dengue virus (DENV) is a serious mosquito-borne pathogen. Reports on TTV and DENV in Jordan and the Middle East and North Africa region are limited.

Background: There is a lack of published data investigating injection of autologous platelet rich plasma (A-PRP) alone in the treatment of postmenopausal VVA.

Objectives: In this pilot study, we aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of injection of A-PRP alone in postmenopausal VVA in women without the history of cancer breast to explore its utility as a hormone free therapy for postmenopausal VVA and for vulvovaginal rejuvenation.

Methods: In this pilot study, 47 women with postmenopausal VVA were included.

Promoters of therapeutic inertia in managing hypertension: a consensus-based study.

Objectives: Hypertension is among the most commonly managed diseases in general practice. Therapeutic inertia could be responsible for the vast majority of cardiovascular events in patients with hypertension. The present study was conducted to explore views and opinions of clinicians involved in providing health care services to patients with hypertension in Palestine and achieve formal consensus on promoters of the phenomenon of therapeutic inertia from their point of view.

Impact of Educational Intervention to Promote Jordanian Community Pharmacists' Knowledge and Perception Towards Antimicrobial Stewardship: Pre-Post Interventional Study.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of an online educational workshop on improving the knowledge, and perception of community pharmacists in Jordan towards the antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and enhancing their ability to appropriately select correct antibiotic therapy.

Methods: This is a pre-post study that was conducted in Jordan in December 2020. An electronic questionnaire was used to assess the awareness, perception of community pharmacists towards AMS, and their ability to appropriately select correct antibiotic before and after the educational workshop.

Importance: The research of new therapeutic modalities, especially with energy-based devices, has been increasing nowadays for genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) management. Microablative fractional CO2 laser has been used for pelvic floor dysfunction management.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization issued a practical approach and Global Action Plan to control the threatening emerging antibacterial resistance. One of the main bases of this plan is the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASPs). This study aimed to evaluate community pharmacists' awareness and perception towards antimicrobial resistance and ASPs in Jordan.

Effect of piroxicam administration in infertile women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: To evaluate piroxicam effect on different pregnancy outcomes among infertile women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART).

Methods: We searched for the available randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in four different databases during January 2021 that compared piroxicam (intervention group) to placebo/no treatment (control group) in infertile women performing ART. We extracted the available data from included studies and pooled them in a meta-analysis model using RevMan software.

Boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) have been proposed as probes for bioimaging owing their to outstanding photoluminescent properties, although their hydrophobic nature and strong aggregation tendency in aqueous media limit their application in the biomedical field. Circumstances of Substance Use by Street Youth in Egypt Support the Case for Intervening to Prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences.

Background: Egyptian street youth use substances including tobacco, illicit drugs, and pharmaceutical drugs. To understand the circumstances, including adverse childhood experiences, that place adolescents at risk for engaging in substance use, we conducted in-depth interviews among a sample of Egyptian street children.

Methods: From youth residing at or attending Caritas, a non-profit organization, which provides shelter and education to street youth, seven girls and twelve boys, aged 12 to 18 years, participated in open-ended, in-depth interviews.

Simple predictors of nonresponse to direct-acting antivirals in chronic hepatitis C patients.

Objectives: The introduction of direct acting antivirals (DAAs) has resulted in very high sustained virological response rates (SVR) in patients with chronic hepatitis-C (CHC). There are still a minority who fails to achieve SVR. This study aims to identify simple factors associated with nonresponse to DAAs using routine pretreatment workup.

Effect of mode of delivery on female sexual function: A cross-sectional study.

Spontaneous Viral Load Decline and Subsequent Clearance of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus in Postpartum Women Correlates With Favorable Interleukin-28B Gene Allele.

Background: Postpartum hepatitis C viral (HCV) load decline followed by spontaneous clearance has been previously described. Herein we identify predictors for viral decline in a cohort of HCV-infected postpartum women.

Methods: Pregnant women at Cairo University were screened for anti-HCV antibodies and HCV RNA, and viremic women were tested for quantitative HCV RNA at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months postpartum.

Can Serum ICAM 1 distinguish pancreatic cancer from chronic pancreatitis?

Background and aim: Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with an overall 5-year survival of <5% mainly due to presence of advanced disease at time of diagnosis. Therefore development of valid biomarkers to diagnose pancreatic cancer in early stages is an urgent need. This study concerned the sensitivity and specificity of serum ICAM 1 versus CA 19-9 in differentiation between pancreatic cancer and healthy subjects and acohort of patients with chronic pancreatitis with a focus on assessing validity in diagnosis of early stages of pancreatic cancer.

Use of personal digital assistants to detect healthcare-associated infections in a neonatal intensive care unit in Egypt.

Introduction: Personal digital assistants (PDAs) used in electronic laboratory-based surveillance are a promising alternative to conventional surveillance to detect healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The aim of the study was to monitor, detect, and analyze HAIs using PDAs in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Methodology: In this descriptive study, 1,053 neonates admitted to the NICU in the obstetrics and gynecology ward at the Cairo University hospital were included and evaluated for HAIs by collecting data using PDAs programmed by Naval Medical Research Unit 3, Cairo, with the definitions for HAIs provided by the National Healthcare Safety Network of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Parental perceptions of congenital cardiovascular malformations in their children.

We assessed parental attitudes towards congenital cardiovascular malformations in their children in a cross-sectional study in Egypt. Parents face many problems related to concerns about their child's prognosis, but these associations with parental stress have never been evaluated in Egypt or examined in relation to religiosity in a predominantly Muslim society. Accordingly, we conducted interviews in Cairo with mothers of 99 sequential infants born with conotruncal heart malformations (cases) and 65 mothers of age-matched controls.
