Both the bacterial flagellum and the evolutionary related injectisome encoded on the Salmonella pathogenicity island 1 (SPI-1) play crucial roles during the infection cycle of Salmonella species. The interplay of both is highlighted by the complex cross-regulation that includes transcriptional control of the flagellar master regulatory operon flhDC by HilD, the master regulator of SPI-1 gene expression. Contrary to the HilD-dependent activation of flagellar gene expression, we report here that activation of HilD resulted in a dramatic loss of motility, which was dependent on the presence of SPI-1.

Background: Pain is the most incapacitating symptom of knee osteoarthritis (OA), with intermittent and/or continuous nature as described by the patients. Accuracy of pain assessment tools across different cultures is important. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Intermittent and Constant OsteoArthritis Pain (ICOAP) measure into Arabic (ICOAP-Ar) and evaluate its psychometric properties in patients with knee OA.

Background: There is a lack of published data investigating injection of autologous platelet rich plasma (A-PRP) alone in the treatment of postmenopausal VVA.

Objectives: In this pilot study, we aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of injection of A-PRP alone in postmenopausal VVA in women without the history of cancer breast to explore its utility as a hormone free therapy for postmenopausal VVA and for vulvovaginal rejuvenation.

Methods: In this pilot study, 47 women with postmenopausal VVA were included.

Objectives: Hypertension is among the most commonly managed diseases in general practice. Therapeutic inertia could be responsible for the vast majority of cardiovascular events in patients with hypertension. The present study was conducted to explore views and opinions of clinicians involved in providing health care services to patients with hypertension in Palestine and achieve formal consensus on promoters of the phenomenon of therapeutic inertia from their point of view.

Boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) have been proposed as probes for bioimaging owing their to outstanding photoluminescent properties, although their hydrophobic nature and strong aggregation tendency in aqueous media limit their application in the biomedical field. In this work, we synthesize BNQDs by a liquid exfoliation-solvothermal process under pressure from boron nitride nanoparticles in N,N-dimethylformamide. The BNQDs display an average size of 3.

Objectives: The introduction of direct acting antivirals (DAAs) has resulted in very high sustained virological response rates (SVR) in patients with chronic hepatitis-C (CHC). There are still a minority who fails to achieve SVR. This study aims to identify simple factors associated with nonresponse to DAAs using routine pretreatment workup.

Cancer is a major worldwide health problem, for which chemotherapy is a common treatment option. However drug toxicity and the development of resistance to chemotherapy are two main challenges associated with the traditional anticancer drugs. Combined pharmacological therapy based on different mechanisms might be an effective strategy in cancer treatment, and could exhibit a synergistic therapeutic efficacy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the use of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions as a biomarker for tracking disease progression and survival in patients with HCV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) while also examining the link to folic acid levels.
  • Researchers analyzed serum folic acid and lymphocytic mtDNA deletions in 90 patients (50 with HCC, 20 with cirrhosis, and 20 with chronic hepatitis C) and found significantly higher mtDNA deletion rates in HCC patients compared to others.
  • The results indicated a correlation between folate deficiency and increased mtDNA deletions, suggesting that higher mtDNA deletion frequencies were linked to shorter survival times in HCC patients, supporting the potential

Background and aim: Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with an overall 5-year survival of <5% mainly due to presence of advanced disease at time of diagnosis. Therefore development of valid biomarkers to diagnose pancreatic cancer in early stages is an urgent need. This study concerned the sensitivity and specificity of serum ICAM 1 versus CA 19-9 in differentiation between pancreatic cancer and healthy subjects and acohort of patients with chronic pancreatitis with a focus on assessing validity in diagnosis of early stages of pancreatic cancer.

Introduction: Personal digital assistants (PDAs) used in electronic laboratory-based surveillance are a promising alternative to conventional surveillance to detect healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The aim of the study was to monitor, detect, and analyze HAIs using PDAs in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Methodology: In this descriptive study, 1,053 neonates admitted to the NICU in the obstetrics and gynecology ward at the Cairo University hospital were included and evaluated for HAIs by collecting data using PDAs programmed by Naval Medical Research Unit 3, Cairo, with the definitions for HAIs provided by the National Healthcare Safety Network of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

We assessed parental attitudes towards congenital cardiovascular malformations in their children in a cross-sectional study in Egypt. Parents face many problems related to concerns about their child's prognosis, but these associations with parental stress have never been evaluated in Egypt or examined in relation to religiosity in a predominantly Muslim society. Accordingly, we conducted interviews in Cairo with mothers of 99 sequential infants born with conotruncal heart malformations (cases) and 65 mothers of age-matched controls.
