Infectious keratitis in Vietnam: etiology, organisms, and management at Vietnam National Eye Hospital.

Aim: To report the etiologies, risk factors, treatments, and outcomes of infectious keratitis (IK) at a major Vietnamese eye hospital.

Methods: This is a retrospective review of all cases of IK at Vietnam National Eye Hospital (VNEH) in Hanoi, Vietnam. Medical histories, demographics, clinical features, microbiological results, and treatment outcomes were reviewed.

Identification of a Novel Missense Mutation in a Vietnamese Family with Meesmann Corneal Dystrophy.

Meesmann epithelial corneal dystrophy (MECD) is a rare dominantly inherited disorder that is characterized by corneal epithelial microcysts and is associated with mutations in the keratin 3 and keratin 12 genes. In this study, we report a novel mutation in the gene in a Vietnamese pedigree with MECD. Slit-lamp examination was performed on each of the 7 recruited members of a Vietnamese family to identify characteristic features of MECD.

Evaluation of Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery Outcomes After Penetrating Keratoplasty.

Background: Cataract is one of the reasons which causes impaired visual acuity (VA) of the eyes after penetrating keratoplasy (PK), which can be treated by cataract surgery after PK or triple procedure. Cataract surgery after PK has advantages that parameters of the eyes such as axial length, anterior chamber depth (ACD) as well as corneal curvature are stabilized after removing all sutures postoperatively, and intraocular lens (IOL) power can be calculated correctly. Therefore, postoperative VA will be improved significantly.
