Genetic transformation is a critical tool for gene manipulation and functional analyses in plants, enabling the exploration of key phenotypes and agronomic traits at the genetic level. While dicotyledonous plants offer various tissues for in vitro culture and transformation, monocotyledonous plants, such as rice, have limited options. This study presents an efficient method for genetically transforming rice ( L.

This study investigated particle and volatile organic compound (VOC) emission rates (ER) from 3D pens, which are increasingly popular in children's toys. Nine filaments and two 3D pens were evaluated using a flow tunnel, a scanning mobility particle sizer, a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer for particles, and a thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometer for VOCs. Results showed that the ERs varied with the pen type, filament, and brand.

Climate change is a looming public health challenge. The health consequences of climate change are increasingly recognized as contributing to negative health outcomes for individuals, families, communities, and populations. The education of health professionals in academic programs and continuing education in clinical practice settings is critical in today's world.

Many studies have evaluated the hazardous substances contained in various household chemical products. However, for aerosol spray products there is currently no international standard sampling method for use in a component analysis. The aim of this study was to develop an appropriate sampling method for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in consumer aerosol sprays.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the hazardous airborne agents produced during the manufacturing of welding materials by collecting samples at various sites.
  • Various methods were used to measure concentrations of airborne particles, total suspended particles, volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals in the air.
  • Results show high concentrations of total suspended particles and heavy metals, indicating potential health risks for workers due to increased exposure to harmful nanoparticles during the heat treatment process.

Flowering time (in rice, termed the heading date), plant height, and grain number are crucial agronomic traits for rice productivity. The heading date is controlled via environmental factors (day length and temperature) and genetic factors (floral genes). encodes a protein that controls meristem identity and participates in regulating flowering.

Introduction: Polysaccharide and alcohol extracts of Hayata have attracted great attention as they exhibit noteworthy properties such as prebiotic and anti-hyperglycemic effects. However, the antioxidant and wound-healing activities of the polysaccharide extract as well as the antibacterial and cytotoxic effects of the ethanol extracts have not been thoroughly uncovered. Therefore, our study investigated these bioactivities of the two extracts prepared from to broaden understandings of medical benefits of the plant.

Context: Alkaloid-enriched extract of (Thunb.) Trevis (Lycopodiaceae) (HsAE) can potentially be used to manage neuronal disorders.

Objective: This study determines the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of HsAE on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells and the underlying mechanisms.

Quercetin (Qu) is a dietary antioxidant and a member of flavonoids in the plant polyphenol family. Qu has a high ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) molecules; hence, exhibiting beneficial effects in preventing obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and inflammation. However, quercetin has low bioavailability due to poor water solubility, low absorption, and rapid excretion from the body.

Article Synopsis
  • The drooping leaf (dl) phenotype in rice results from failed midrib formation, which is essential for leaf structure and development.
  • The new mutant, dl-6, exhibits severely folded and twisted leaves but maintains normal flower structure, indicating a specific genetic impairment.
  • Genetic analysis revealed that the dl-6 trait is recessive and linked to mutations in the DL gene, affecting a YABBY transcription factor essential for midrib and vascular structure development.

Acute myocarditis is one of the common complications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with a relatively high case fatality. Here reported is a fulminant case of a 42-year-old previously healthy woman with cardiogenic shock and refractory cardiac arrest due to COVID-19-induced myocarditis who received veno-arterial (VA) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) after 120 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This is the first adult case of cardiac arrest due to COVID-19-induced myocarditis supported by ECMO that fully recovered with normal neurological functions.

Background: The treatment of zygoma complex fractures is of crucial importance in the field of plastic surgery. However, surgical methods to correct zygoma complex fractures, including the number of fixation sites, differ among operators. Although several studies have compared two-point and three-point fixation, no comparative research has yet been conducted on one-point versus two-point fixation using computed tomography scans of surgical results.

Sunburn causes fruit browning and other physiological symptoms, reducing fruit production and quality. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the anatomical differences and abiotic stress responses in 'Nichinan 1 gou' satsuma mandarin ( Marc.) according to the severity of sunburn damage (five grades: control, no sunburn; I to IV, increasing severity of sunburn).

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to understand why bystanders in Hanoi, Vietnam, often do not use Emergency Medical Services (EMS) or perform CPR for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients.
  • Data was collected from interviews with bystanders of 101 OHCA patients, revealing that a significant 85% chose private transport over EMS, and a majority of bystanders lacked CPR training and didn’t recognize cardiac arrest symptoms.
  • The findings emphasize the importance of increasing community awareness and training on EMS utilization, cardiac arrest recognition, and CPR skills to improve outcomes for OHCA patients in Vietnam.

Leaf angle and grain size are important agronomic traits affecting rice productivity directly and/or indirectly through modulating crop architecture. OsBC1, as a typical bHLH transcription factor, is one of the components comprising a complex formed with LO9-177 and OsBUL1 contributing to modulation of rice leaf inclination and grain size. In the current study, two homologues of , and were functionally characterized by expressing them under the control of promoter, which is preferentially expressed in the lamina joint and the spikelet of rice.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on lupus nephritis, a serious complication of systemic lupus erythematosus, particularly in Asian populations, and examines the role of specific gene variants in this condition.
  • Researchers analyzed 152 SLE patients with lupus nephritis and 76 healthy controls, looking specifically at SNPs in the STAT4, CDKN1A, and IRF5 genes, alongside clinical assessments and renal biopsies.
  • Findings indicate that carriers of a specific variant (rs7582694 C alleles) in the STAT4 gene have a significantly higher risk of developing lupus nephritis and a more severe disease presentation, while no significant associations were found with CDKN1A or IRF5

Across Asia, a large proportion of people with tuberculosis (TB) do not report symptoms, have mild symptoms or only experience symptoms for a short duration. These individuals may not seek care at health facilities or may be missed by symptom screening, resulting in sustained TB transmission in the community. We evaluated the yields of TB from 114 days of community-based, mobile chest X-ray (CXR) screening.

Background: In order to end tuberculosis (TB), it is necessary to expand coverage of TB care services, including systematic screening initiatives. However, more evidence is needed for groups among whom systematic screening is only conditionally recommended by the World Health Organization. This study evaluated concurrent screening in multiple target groups using community health workers (CHW).
