In this paper, we report the synthesis and characterization of unconventional nanocomposites made of bimetallic nanoparticles dispersed in a liquid crystal glass. Core-shell bimetallic nanoparticles (Ag/Au or Au/Ag) and Ag-Au bimetallic nanoalloys are synthesized using cadmium alkanoate glass-forming liquid crystals as nanoreactors. Optical spectra of the produced glassy nanocomposites exhibit a distinctive absorption peak due to a surface plasmon resonance.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the dielectric properties of ionic composites made from a cadmium octanoate matrix and various nanoparticles (semiconductors and metals).
  • Different types of nanoparticles (CdS, Au, Au-CdS) were synthesized within the smectic A phase of the cadmium octanoate, resulting in stable and well-ordered nanocomposites with controlled size and shape.
  • Findings show that the conductivity of these nanocomposites varies significantly depending on the direction (higher along cation-anion layers), indicating structural anisotropy, and a simple model for charge transport was proposed based on the data collected.
