Article Synopsis
  • Microbial hitchhiking is when nonmoving microbes use the movement of other organisms to navigate their environment, but the reasons behind it are not well understood.
  • * A study was conducted to see how nitrogen fertilizers impact microbial hitchhiking in soil by using plants and filter membranes to manage the environment.
  • * Results revealed that nitrogen changes bacterial diversity and mobility in soil, especially when plants are present, but these effects are reduced when filter membranes are used to block hitchhiking.

The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) regulates plant growth and development and stress resistance through the ABA receptor PYLs. To date, no interaction between CPK and PYL has been reported, even in Arabidopsis and rice. In this study, we found that MdCPK4 from Malus domestica (Md for short) interacts with two MdPYLs, MdPYL2/12, in the nucleus and the cytoplasm in vivo and phosphorylates the latter in vitro as well.
