Variations in the management and outcome of non-small cell lung cancer in Ontario.

Prospectively gathered information in the Ontario Cancer Foundation's computerized clinical database was analysed to provide a description of the management of 12,399 patients with unresected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) registered at seven regional cancer centres in Ontario between 1982 and 1991. Overall, 44% received initial thoracic radiotherapy, 19% received initial radiotherapy to metastatic sites, and 36% received no immediate radiotherapy. Of those who received thoracic radiation 41% received doses > or = 40 Gy and 59% received doses < 40 Gy.

Molecular weight alterations of alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor in equine bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

The equine alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor (alpha 1PI) system differs from that of man in that the equine system consists of four closely-linked genes (Spi1-Spi4) whereas in man, a single gene encodes for alpha 1PI. We have previously found differences in the proportion of the Spi proteins in equine serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). We therefore wished to determine whether, as reported in man, there was any molecular weight difference between the Spi proteins in serum and BALF.

What we learn from a clinical database.

A clinical database documents caseload, assesses treatments, compares treatments, follows patients, and can be used for effective teaching. The database and software used at Kingston Regional Cancer Clinic are described, and a few pertinent findings are presented.

Small-Scale Dispersion of Eggs and Sperm of the Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (Acanthaster planci) in a Shallow Coral Reef Habitat.

The dispersal of eggs and sperm of crown-of-thorns starfish, Acanthaster planci (L.), was measured in the field using an array of collectors up to 10 m downstream of a spawning starfish. Hydrodynamic measurements, gamete dispersal numerical models, and the gamete cloud dispersal measurements for the first time quantified the relationship between hydrodynamic conditions and the dispersion of eggs and sperm in the field.

The Effects of Sperm Concentration, Sperm:Egg Ratio, and Gamete Age on Fertilization Success in Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (Acanthaster planci) in the Laboratory.

Laboratory experiments varying gamete concentrations and gamete age demonstrated significant reductions in fertilization success of the starfish Acanthaster planci (L.) with decreasing sperm concentration and increasing age of both eggs and sperm. The effect of aging in sperm was faster than that of eggs, and the speed of sperm aging increased with increasing dilution of sperm.

Temporal integration and segregation of brief visual stimuli: patterns of correlation in time.

Two brief sequential displays separated by a brief interstimulus interval (ISI) are often perceived as a temporally integrated unitary configuration. The probability of temporal integration can be decreased by increasing the ISI or (counterintuitively) by increasing stimulus duration. We tested three hypotheses of the relative contributions of stimulus duration and ISI to the breakdown of temporal integration (the storage, processing, and temporal correlation hypotheses).

Vibrotactile and electrotactile perception of time-varying pulse trains.

To establish the best strategy for transmitting speech-derived information via a single tactile channel, measurements were made on the perception of frequency- and/or amplitude-modulated pulse-train stimuli, with a comparison of the electrotactile and vibrotactile modalities. In one experiment, vibrotactile perception of 2-oct step changes in stimulus frequency was found to be significantly better than electrotactile on a time-scale appropriate for the transmission of speech features (e.g.

Beyond visible persistence: an alternative account of temporal integration and segregation in visual processing.

When processing sequences of rapidly varying stimuli, the visual system must satisfy two conflicting requirements. To maintain perceptual continuity, sequential stimuli must be integrated into a single, unified percept. On the other hand, to detect rapid changes, sequential stimuli must be segregated from each other.

Patterns of failure following loco-regional radiotherapy in the treatment of limited stage small cell lung cancer.

Purpose: The probability of treatment resistant cells developing in a tumor, such as small cell lung cancer (SCLC) which has a rapid cell cycle time, is a function of the number of tumor cells present and of time. Theoretically, the development of resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy should be minimized by using all treatment modalities early in the treatment program.

University of Alberta norms of relative meaning frequency for 566 homographs.

For many models of lexical ambiguity resolution, relative frequency of the different meanings of homographs (words with more than one meaning) is crucial. Although several homograph association norms have been published in the past, none has involved a large number of subjects responding to a large number of homographs, and most homograph norming studies are now at least a decade old. In Experiment 1, associations to 566 homographs were collected from an average of 192 subjects per homograph.

Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus in prisoners: meeting the health care challenge.

The magnitude and the scope of health care problems posed by human prison inmates seropositive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are enormous. Prisoners represent a substantial proportion of HIV-infected individuals in North America. A high proportion of prisoners are intravenous drug users who often have not received appropriate health care or HIV-directed services prior to incarceration.

Local and systemic antibody production in horses affected with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to quantify isotype-specific antibody to Micropolyspora faeni and to Aspergillus fumigatus in the sera and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of normal horses, horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and horses with other chronic respiratory diseases. Elevated antibody levels were not detected in the sera of affected horses. However, both IgE and IgA antibody to both allergens was significantly elevated in BALF in COPD affected horses sampled both when symptomatic and asymptomatic.

Cricopharyngeal-laryngeal dysplasia in a horse with sudden clinical onset idiopathic laryngeal hemiparesis.

A 7-year-old Thoroughbred racehorse developed loud exercise-related respiratory noises and exercise intolerance over a short period. Examination showed congenital cricopharyngeal-laryngeal dysplasia (rostral displacement of the palatopharyngeal arch) and also left sided idiopathic laryngeal hemiparesis, the latter appearing to be of recent clinical onset. The animal developed colic some months after laryngeal surgery and a nephrosplenic entrapment was surgically corrected.

Comparison of cellular and molecular components of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid harvested from different segments of the equine lung.

A comparison was made of the cellular and molecular components of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) harvested from the left and right diaphragmatic lobes, the accessory lobe of the right lung and the apical lobe of the left lung, of seven control horses and six horses with symptomatic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Neither control nor symptomatic COPD affected horses showed significant regional differences in BALF recovery volumes, total and differential BALF cell counts, albumen adjusted total and absolute BALF cell counts, total and absolute pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF) cell counts, and BALF albumen and urea concentrations. This suggests that the composition of PELF is uniform throughout the lungs of normal horses and horses with symptomatic COPD and that a single BALF sample is representative of the entire lung in these horses.

Evaluation of urea and albumen as endogenous markers of dilution of equine bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.
