Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a primary cause of disability in adults, affecting daily functioning and decreasing quality of life. The focus on the role of nutraceuticals as adjunctive treatments to improve antidepressant response is paying growing interest. The study aims to compare the antidepressants response in the utilization of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) versus a combination of SSRIs and nutraceutical supplements based on S-Adenosyl methionine (SAMe), N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and folate in terms of efficacy and tolerability.

Background: The impact of menopause is a consequence of social, physical and mental changes; hormonal changes play an important role in inducing an increased risk of developing depressive symptoms. It is essential to treat mood and vasomotor symptoms and to prevent their onset to promote an improvement in the quality of life, both in terms of clinical and psychological conditions.

Objective: This observational study aims to compare paroxetine and vortioxetine in a sample of patients affected by postmenopausal depression attending the Anxiety and Depression Clinic in terms of: efficacy in determining clinical remission (HDRS ≤ 7) and tolerability; improvement of autonomic and cognitive symptoms.

Objective: Resilience is a multidimensional process of adaptation aimed to overcome stressful or traumatic life experiences; only in the last few years it has been considered as a personal resource in psychosis and schizophrenia. This study aimed to assess the relationship between intrapersonal and interpersonal resilience factors and schizophrenia, particularly whether and how resilience can improve the course of psychotic illness.

Patients And Methods: In this observational study, all patients recruited had to fulfill the following inclusion criteria: diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder (); aged between 18 and 65 years; provided written informed consent; to be clinically stable (Clinical Global Impression Scale <3); history of illness ≥5 years; to be compliant with antipsychotic therapy over the last year; and regular submission to periodic monthly psychiatric visits.

A systematic search for all case reports and case series of adult patients with factitious disorders (FD) in the databases MEDLINE, Scopus, and PsycINFO was conducted. FD is a psychiatric disorder in which sufferers intentionally fabricate physical or psychological symptoms in order to assume the role of a patient, without any obvious gain. The clinical and demographic profile of patients with FD has not been sufficiently clear.

Objective: This study was designed to describe the surgical technique for single-incision laparoscopic right colectomy and present preliminary short-term results. Laparoscopic surgery has been fully validated as alternative, minimally invasive treatment for different benign and malignant conditions. In the attempt to reduce even more the surgical trauma, natural orifices transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES™) and single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) have been proposed.

Background: Polypharmacy is regarded as an important risk factor for fallingand several studies and meta-analyses have shown an increased fall risk in users of diuretics, type 1a antiarrhythmics, digoxin and psychotropic agents. In particular, recent evidence has shown that fall risk is associated with the use of polypharmacy regimens that include at least one established fall risk-increasing drug, rather than with polypharmacy per se. We studied the role of polypharmacy and the role of well-known fall risk-increasing drugs on the incidence of injurious falls.

There are principally two procedures: Milligan-Morgan hemorrhoidectomy (MMH) and Longo stapled hemorrhoidopexy (SH). Furthermore great progress has been done in surgical technologies with the use of the Ligasure and the Doppler-guided hemorrhoidal artery ligation.

Since the first report in 1991 the laparoscopic resection of colon cancer is progressing slowly and just in the last 2-3 years is becoming more popular. The resistance to its use by some general and colo-rectal surgeons is receding. The explanations are that technology is evolving quickly and there is a worldwide diffusion of more sophisticated surgical instruments.

Rectal cancer continues to be one of the most common tumors worldwide. Its prognosis mainly depends on early diagnosis and precise stage evaluation in order to choose the most effective treatment. In recent years, new and promising technologies have been proposed and are now available in daily practice.

Postoperative infectious complications still represent a relevant problem in colorectal surgery. They always results in suffering for the patients and often prolonged hospitalization. Furthermore, they result in additional expenses to cover the cost of antibiotics, blood derivates, total parenteral nutrition, nursing and additional surgical procedures.

The utility of antibiotic prophylaxis for colorectal surgery has been assessed and largely confirmed worldwide. There is homogeneous consensus that the antibiotic chosen for prophylaxis must cover both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, that the toxicity should be minimal and it should be cost effective. Recent studies have questioned the role of preoperative bowel cleansing, which is considered by many surgeons as a widely established practice prior to elective colorectal procedures.

Rectal cancer is one of the most common tumors worldwide; it accounts for approximately 25-30% of cancers arising in the large bowel. Owing to greater distribution of screening programs and better attention from both patients and General Practitioners to this disease, in recent years we have observed an increasing number of cases diagnosed in the early stages, with a consequent better prognosis. The improved 5-year survival is also partially due to better, and more accurate, diagnostic techniques and to more curative treatments.

Background: Perioperative blood transfusion carries numerous potential risks concerning the transmission of infective diseases and immunodepression that can facilitate the occurrence of postoperative infectious complications. Explanation of connections between perioperative blood transfusion and postoperative septic complication worldwide is not well documented. Many studies have described a correlation between perioperative blood transfusions and postoperative infections.

Background: After the availability of the results of validation studies, the sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has replaced routine axillary dissection (AD) as the new standard of care in early unifocal breast cancers. Multifocal (MF) and multicentric (MC) tumors have been considered a contraindication for this technique due to the possible incidence of a higher false-negative rate. This prospective study evaluates the lymphatic drainage from different tumoral foci of the breast and assesses the accuracy of SLNB in MF-MC breast cancer.
