Background: Criteria assessing biochemical response to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) are established risk stratification tools in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). We aimed to evaluate to what extent liver tests influenced patient management during a three decade period, and whether this changed over time.
Methods: 851 Dutch PBC patients diagnosed between 1988 and 2012 were reviewed to assess patient management in relation to liver test results during UDCA treatment.

During treatment with acitretin, a novel oral retinoid, which is the main derivative of etretinate, the patient developed a severe hepatotoxic reaction. Subsequent histological studies strongly suggested the development of liver cirrhosis.

Conventional HBV serological markers, as well as serum alanine amino transferase and hepatitis B virus DNA (HBV DNA) were studied in a population of 667 institutionalized mentally handicapped males and females and in 676 staff members. The role of Down's syndrome (DS), sex and age-related factors with respect to the prevalence of these markers was analyzed. A young age at admission was found as one of the important factors in the development of the chronic HBsAg carrier state in females.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFTo examine the relationship of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA sequences in the liver with histopathologic features and antigenic markers, the authors determined the hepatocytic status of viral DNA by in situ hybridization in formalin-fixed liver sections using a biotinylated probe in 45 patients with various chronic liver diseases. The results were compared retrospectively with the HBV serologic markers and histopathologic features including the presence of ground-glass cells or Shikata staining positivity. The specificity of this in situ detection of HBV DNA has been proven excellent in a double-blind control study in 18 patients in whom liver HBV DNA was also determined by DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and the Southern blotting technique.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSera from four groups of patients wtih different serologic markers of HBV infection were examined for HBV DNA using molecular hybridization technique and for IgM class anti-HBc using an ELISA based on the antibody capture principle. Results of HBV DNA assay were generally in good agreement with the presence of HBeAg. However, HBV DNA was found in 13% of anti-HBe+ sera and in one patient with anti-HBc as a sole marker.
