Background: Diagnosing acute disease in older adults is challenged by vague and atypical symptoms. Point-of-care tests (POCTs) at home may improve diagnostics and clinical decision-making. We compared various POCT devices to routine testing in acutely ill older adults to assess their clinical reliability.

Article Synopsis
  • As people age, the risk vs. benefit of using preventive medications like bisphosphonates must be carefully evaluated, leading to considerations of deprescribing in older adults.
  • A systematic review assessed osteoporosis guidelines and found that out of 42 guidelines, 76% included some form of deprescribing recommendations, primarily suggesting drug holidays rather than tailored approaches.
  • The findings indicate a gap in specific, individualized guidance for deprescribing, highlighting the need for better recommendations in osteoporosis management.

This systematic review investigated the effect of low-load resistance training combined with blood-flow restriction (LL-BFR) on falls in older adults ≥60 years of age. The databases Embase, Medline, and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to October 1, 2019 and reference lists of retrieved publications. Main outcomes were fall rates or proportion of fallers.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect on physical performance of combining whole-body vibration exercise (WBV) with parathyroid hormone 1-34 (teriparatide) compared to teriparatide alone.

Methods: A secondary analysis from a RCT where postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis were randomised to WBV plus teriparatide (intervention) or teriparatide alone (control). WBV was applied three times/week (6x1min WBV:1 min rest, (peak acceleration 3.

Background: PaVOS is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) which aims to address the use of whole-body vibration exercise (WBV) in combination with parathyroid hormone 1-34 fragment teriparatide (PTH 1-34) treatment in patients with osteoporosis. PTH 1-34 is an effective but expensive anabolic treatment for osteoporosis. WBV has been found to stimulate muscle and bone growth.

Objective: To investigate the effect of whole-body vibration exercise (WBV) on fracture risk in adults ≥50 years of age.

Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis calculating relative risk ratios, fall rate ratio and absolute weighted mean difference using random effects models. Heterogeneity was estimated using I statistics, and the Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool and the GRADE approach were used to evaluate quality of evidence and summarise conclusions.

Background: Functional decline is associated with increased risk of mortality in geriatric patients. Assessment of activities of daily living (ADL) with the Barthel Index (BI) at admission was studied as a predictor of survival in older patients admitted to an acute geriatric unit.

Methods: All first admissions of patients with age >65 years between January 1st 2005 and December 31st 2009 were included.
