Pruritic Vulvovaginitis in a Young Girl: A Case of Vulvovaginal Enterobiasis.

Vulvovaginal enterobiasis is underreported and an often-missed diagnosis in prepubertal girls presenting with isolated nocturnal vulvar pruritus. An 8-year-old-girl with intense nocturnal vulvar itching for 4 months was diagnosed with enterobiasis after microscopy of a vaginal swab revealed Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) ova. The child and her family were treated with two doses of oral albendazole, 2 weeks apart, resulting in symptom resolution.

Preoperative coagulopathy and blood transfusion requirements in children with intraventricular lesions undergoing neurosurgery: a retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: Pediatric patients undergoing neurosurgery pose risk of perioperative hemorrhage and clotting dysfunction which is increased in tumors with high vascularity, endothelial exposure, and necrosis. Lesions affecting the ventricular system may arise from several etiologies, including rare tumors. The present study aimed to study the preoperative coagulation and transfusion profile of pediatric patients undergoing neurosurgery for intraventricular lesions.

Clinical Reasoning: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Challenges in a 16-Year-Old With Early-Onset Ataxia.

A 16-year-old adolescent girl presented with progressive walking imbalance, uncoordination of her limbs, impaired proprioceptive sensation distal to her wrists and ankles, and sensorineural hearing loss. Her evaluation revealed diffuse cerebellar atrophy, a demyelinating neuropathy, and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. In this article, we present a systematic approach to a patient with early-onset ataxia, cerebellar atrophy, and demyelinating neuropathy.

Chronic kidney diseases (CKD) are a group of multi-factorial disorders that markedly impair kidney functions with progressive renal deterioration. Aging contributes to age-specific phenotypes in kidneys, which undergo several structural and functional alterations, such as a decline in regenerative capacity and increased fibrosis, inflammation, and tubular atrophy, all predisposing them to disease and increasing their susceptibility to injury while impeding their recovery. Spatio-temporal analysis of extreme air pollution and risk assessment.

Extreme air pollution poses global health and environmental threats, necessitating robust policy interventions. This study first analyses the surface mass concentration of major aerosols (such as black carbon, organic carbon, dust, sea salts, and sulphates) to estimate global PM concentrations from 1980 to 2023. The developed model-estimated PM database was validated against data from 526 cities worldwide, showing strong accuracy, with RMSE, r, and R values of 7.

Pure Yolk Sac Testicular Tumour in an Adult: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Pure yolk sac tumours are much more common in children, but when they do occur in adults, onset can be both insidious and aggressive. The best practice for identification involves the precise use of ultrasound, blood tests for tumour markers and FDG-PET/CT imaging for staging.

Objective: Despite treatments which reduce relapses in multiple sclerosis (MS), many patients continue to experience progressive disability accumulation. MS is associated with metabolic disruptions and cerebral metabolic stress predisposes to tissue injury and possibly impaired remyelination. Additionally, myelin homeostasis is metabolically expensive and reliant on glycolysis.

Resolving the design principles that control postnatal vascular growth and scaling.

After birth, tissues grow continuously until reaching adult size, with each organ exhibiting unique cellular dynamics, growth patterns, and (stem or non-stem) cell sources. Using a suite of experimental and computational multiscale approaches, we found that aortic expansion is guided by specific biological principles and scales with the vertebral column rather than animal body weight. Expansion proceeds via two distinct waves of arterial cell proliferation along blood flow that are spatially stochastic, yet temporally coordinated.

Aging and the Spectral Properties of Brain Hemodynamics.

Cerebral glucose metabolism (CMRGlc) systematically decreases with advancing age. We sought to identify correlates of decreased CMRGlc in the spectral properties of fMRI signals imaged in the task-free state. We analyzed lifespan resting-state fMRI data acquired in 455 healthy adults (ages 18-87 years) and cerebral metabolic data acquired in a separate cohort of 94 healthy adults (ages 25-45 years, 65-85 years).
