Exposure to risks throughout life results in a wide variety of outcomes. Objectively judging the relative impact of these risks on personal and population health is fundamental to individual survival and societal prosperity. Existing mechanisms to quantify and rank the magnitude of these myriad effects and the uncertainty in their estimation are largely subjective, leaving room for interpretation that can fuel academic controversy and add to confusion when communicating risk.

Background: Meeting the contraceptive needs of women of reproductive age is beneficial for the health of women and children, and the economic and social empowerment of women. Higher rates of contraceptive coverage have been linked to the availability of a more diverse range of contraceptive methods. We present estimates of the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR), modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR), demand satisfied, and the method of contraception used for both partnered and unpartnered women for 5-year age groups in 204 countries and territories between 1970 and 2019.

During a period of wet weather from December 1996 to March 1997, commercial plantings of sunflower in San Diego County, CA, were infected by a leaf smut, Entyloma polysporum (Peck) Farl. The fungus was observed on sunflowers grown in a greenhouse in San Diego County and also on sunflowers from nurseries in Ventura and Riverside counties. Although the disease was first noticed in 1996, the infection was not of economic significance so no attempt was made to identify the causal agent.
