Solid-state systems composed of chalconoid encapsulated within -sulfonatocalix[6]arene (SCX6) scaffolds that exhibit mechanochromism and thermochromism have been developed. An introduction of a supramolecular host promises a variety of applications in diverse areas, which makes them fascinating. Largely hydrogen bonding as well as π···π interactions are responsible for the host-guest complexation.

This work deals with the study of the interaction between 2-cyano-6-hydroxy benzothiazole (CHBT) and p-sulfonatocalix[6]arene (SCX6) at different pH values in aqueous medium by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. The results demonstrate the strong influence of SCX6 on the fluorescence properties of CHBT. The steady-state emission of CHBT shows strong sensitivity to its environment.

The formation of inclusion complexes between lucigenin (N,N'-dimethyl-9,9'-biacridinium dinitrate) and p-sulfonatocalix[n]arenes (SCn; n = 6, 8) was investigated by fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy. Both SC6 and SC8 were found to form 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 host-guest complexes with lucigenin showing up to 10 M binding affinities. Strong quenching of the lucigenin fluorescence upon complexation was observed.

The aqueous solution of fluorescein-para sulfonato calix[4]arene-metal ion complex has been studied based on absorption, fluorescence, (1)H NMR and FTIR spectroscopic results. It was found that the fluorescence intensity quenched regularly upon addition of pSCX4 and metal ion. The quenching constants and binding constants were determined for pSCX4-FL and pSCX4-FL-Cu(2+) systems.

The host-guest interactions of cationic (AcH(+) ) and neutral (Ac) forms of the dye acridine with the macrocyclic host p-sulfonatocalix[6]arene (SCX6) were investigated by using ground-state absorption, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence, and NMR measurements. The cationic form undergoes significant complexation with SCX6 (Keq =2.5×10(4)  M(-1) ), causing a sharp decrease in the fluorescence intensity and severe quenching in the excited-state lifetime of the dye.
