Background: Senegal has made significant progress in reducing the burden of malaria, but transmission remains highly heterogeneous, with specific population subgroups likely at higher risk. Consultations with the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) and a review of available data identified nomadic pastoralists, gold miners, and Koranic school students as potential high-risk populations (HRPs). This study aimed to evaluate whether these populations are at higher risk of malaria and better characterize their exposure patterns to inform the design of targeted intervention strategies.

Anticoagulant-induced spontaneous small bowel hematoma is a rare cause of acute mechanical bowel obstruction. We report the case of a 77-year-old patient with complete arrhythmia due to atrial fibrillation under acenocoumarol 4mg daily who was seen for right iliac fossa pain. The laboratory tests showed a prothrombin rate (PT) of 12%, an International Normalized Ratio (INR) of 6, and an aPTT (activated partial thromboplastin time) of 43 seconds.

Electrochemotherapy (ECT) with intravenous (IV) and/or intratumoral (IT) bleomycin has shown considerable efficacy in the treatment of non-resectable feline cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), boasting response rates of up to 95%, but other chemotherapy protocols have not yet been investigated. The objective of this prospective multicentre study was to compare the overall response rate (ORR) and progression-free interval (PFI) between cats with cSCC treated with ECT using IT and IV carboplatin (IV + IT), IV carboplatin (IV) or IV bleomycin (IV). A total of 44 cats with unresectable cSCC across three centres were enrolled and treated with ECT using carboplatin IV + IT (n = 10), carboplatin IV (n = 11) or bleomycin IV (n = 23).

The effect of adding organized supramolecular systems such as β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) on the photochemically-induced fluorescence (PIF) spectral properties of -fluvalinate (TFV) in aqueous solutions was examined. The influence of pH, UV irradiation time and photoproduct stability on the cyclodextrin-enhanced photochemically-induced fluorescence intensity was also investigated. The spectral changes associated with the inclusion process yielded values for the formation constants of TFV inclusion complexes between 450 and 640 M, which were calculated using the nonlinear iterative regression approach least squares.

Background: Following WHO guidelines, microscopy is the gold standard for malaria diagnosis in endemic countries. The Parasitology-Mycology laboratory (LPM) is the National Reference Laboratory and is currently undergoing ISO 15189 accreditation. In this context, we assessed the performance of the laboratory by confirming the reliability and the accuracy of results obtained in accordance with the requirements of the ISO 15189 standards.

Introduction: Childhood stunting has a complex aetiology, with poor gut health being an important contributor. This study will assess inter-relationships between maternal and infant gut health indices and infant linear growth. Inter-relationships between gut health indices, systemic inflammation and growth hormones in early childhood will also be assessed.

Article Synopsis
  • * 57 cats were included, revealing an overall response rate of 42%, with median survival time of 131 days and a median progression-free interval of 148 days.
  • * Positive prognostic factors included achieving complete or partial response and the absence of lymph node involvement, while negative factors included gastrointestinal tract infiltration and infiltration of non-hematopoietic organs.

This paper compares the performance of three analytical methods for the determination of pesticides in natural waters. As many pesticides are non-fluorescent, they are transformed into highly fluorescent by-products in two ways: elevated temperature in an alkaline medium (thermo-induced fluorescence - TIF); or UV irradiation in water (photo-induced fluorescence - PIF). The first method studied uses TIF, the second one uses PIF and the third one uses an automatic sampling and analysing PIF system.

Atypical fibromuscular dysplasia of the bulb or carotid web is a nonatheromatous pathology more common in African and African-American populations. It is implicated in the occurrence of cerebral infarcts of unknown causes. Its diagnosis is made by angio-CT of the supra-aortic trunks and is characterized by a defect in the posterior wall of the bulb.

Key Clinical Message: Weber's syndrome revealing a Percheron artery infarction is a rare clinical occurrence. Its diagnosis requires careful clinical examination and brain MRI, which is the gold standard for diagnosis. If this is not available, combined cerebral CT scan with a CT angiography of supra-aortic arteries may be useful for the diagnosis.

This paper describes the prototype of an on-site High Sensitivity Early Warning Monitoring System, using Photo-Induced Fluorescence, for pesticide monitoring in natural waters (HSEWPIF). To obtain a high sensitivity, the prototype was designed with four main features. Four UV LEDs are used to excite the photoproducts at different wavelengths and select the most efficient one.

Introduction: In Senegal, marital infertility is a real problem for society. We undertook the study of this subject to make an analysis of the spermatic parameters of the infertile Senegalese man and to better understand the impact of testicular morphological anomalies on male fertility.

Patients And Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive, retrospective study of 100 infertile patients followed at the Histology-Embryology-Cytogenetics laboratory of UCAD in Dakar, during the year 2020.

We carried out a mental health assessment survey of frontline workers in Eastern and Southern Africa regarding COVID-19 pandemic in the region. A total of 723 people responded to the anonymous survey which was available in English, French and Portuguese. Two thirds of respondents felt overwhelmed and the remaining one third expressed fear of the pandemic.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic-and based on limited data on the novel coronavirus-it was projected that African countries will be ravaged and the health systems overwhelmed. Fortunately, Africa has so far defied these dire predictions. Many factors account for the less dramatic outcome, in particular the local know-how gained through dealing with previous epidemics, such as Ebola, and the early and coordinated political and public health response, applying a combination of containment and mitigation measures.

  • The study focuses on evaluating the AMPLIX® real-time PCR technique for measuring hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in comparison to the established COBAS AmpliPrep™ method, which is crucial for managing chronic hepatitis B.
  • Results showed that the AMPLIX® technique demonstrated good reproducibility and repeatability across various viral load levels, with accuracy well within acceptable limits.
  • The correlation between viral load measurements from AMPLIX® and COBAS Taqman was very strong (0.97), indicating that AMPLIX® is a reliable option for monitoring HBV and can be utilized in intermediate laboratories.

This paper describes two prototypes of an on-site Early Warning Water Quality Monitoring System (EWWQMS) for pesticide quantification in natural waters. As many pesticides are non-fluorescent, the EWWQMS setup uses UV photoconversion to form highly fluorescent photoproducts. To enhance sensitivity, the two prototypes use micellar-enhanced fluorescence with surfactant (cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) in aqueous solution.
