Conductive hydrogels are an appealing class of "smart" materials with great application potential, as they combine the stimuli-responsiveness of hydrogels with the conductivity of magnetic fillers. However, fabricating multifunctional conductive hydrogels that simultaneously exhibit conductivity, self-healing, adhesiveness, and anti-freezing properties remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, we introduce here a freeze-thawing approach to develop versatile, multiresponsive composite cryogels able to preserve their features under low-temperature conditions.

Sepsis, a leading cause of death in hospitals, can be defined as a dysregulated host inflammatory response to infection, which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and cardiovascular complications. Although there is no cure for sepsis, the condition is typically managed with broad-spectrum antibiotics to eliminate any potential bacterial source of infection. However, a potential side effect of antibiotic treatment is the enhanced release of bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs), membrane-bound nanoparticles containing proteins and other biological molecules from their parent bacterium.

Porous hydrogels have brought more advantages than conventional hydrogels when used as chromatographic materials, controlled release vehicles for drugs and proteins, matrices for immobilization or separation of molecules and cells, or as scaffolds in tissue engineering. Polysaccharide-based porous hydrogels, in particular, can address challenges related to bioavailability, solubility, stability, and targeted delivery of natural antioxidant compounds. Their porous structure enables the facile encapsulation and controlled release of these compounds, enhancing their therapeutic effectiveness.

Background: The Mediterranean diet (MD), globally recognized for its sustainability and health benefits, traditionally emphasizes the consumption of plant-based foods in raw or minimally processed forms. However, shifting lifestyles, even in Mediterranean regions, have led to an increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF). Epidemiological evidence suggests that UPF consumption may be detrimental to human health, but there is only one clinical trial on this topic which is largely debated in the scientific community.

In this study, we focused on innovative approaches to improve drug administration in oral pathology, especially by transmucosal and transdermal pathways. These improvements refer to the type of microneedles used (proposing needles in the saw), to the use of certain enhancers such as essential oils (which, besides the amplifier action, also have intrinsic actions on oral health), to associations of active substances with synergistic action, as well as the use of copolymeric membranes, cemented directly on the tooth. We also propose a review of the principles of release at the level of the oral mucosa and of the main release systems used in oral pathology.
