Low incidence of human papillomavirus type 16 DNA in bladder tumor detected by the polymerase chain reaction.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) detection was done using the polymerase chain reaction technique on tumor tissue from 44 patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder. Only one of the 44 was associated with HPV infection. The HPV-positive patient was not known to have immunodeficiency or genital warts, and the tumor was not morphologically different from the other tumors.

Comparative analysis of monoclonal antibodies against pestiviruses: report of an international workshop.

Thirty-three pestivirus strains were grown in cell culture and characterized by immunostaining with 19 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against hog cholera virus (HCV), with 42 MAbs against bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) and with 13 MAbs against border disease virus (BDV). Seven MAbs reacted with all pestivirus strains tested, eight MAbs detected only the seven HCV strains, three detected only the 16 BVDV strains. No MAb was found that was specific for BDV.

Therapeutic effect of trisodium phosphonoformate on cutaneous herpesvirus infection in guinea pigs.

When applied topically, trisodium phosphonoformate (PFA) displayed activity against established cutaneous herpesvirus infections in guinea pigs similar to that exhibited by the closely related phosphonoacetic acid (PAA); however, unlike PAA, PFA was not locally skin irritating. The therapeutic benefits of topical application of PFA were clearly evident when application was delayed for 48 h after virus inoculation, at which time lesions were well developed. The therapeutic effect was dependent on the concentration of PFA and the duration of treatment.

Serological study of an outbreak of paresis due to equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1).

Six cases of paresis occurred in a Swedish stud with 48 mares and a stallion. Complement-fixation tests revealed a recent infection with EHV-1 in most horses of the stud. Serumneutralisation tests showed rapid antibody-titre increases during the course of the disease.

The infectivity of equine abortion (herpes) virus (EAV) was inactivated by treatment with reduced dithiothreitol (DTT). According to their susceptibility to DTT, the EAV strains could be divided into three groups. The vaccine strain RAC-H (419) proved to be more resistant to DTT than all of the other 14 strains tested.
