The solution-phase syntheses of 5-carbamoyl-3-sulfanylmethylisoxazole-4-carboxylic acids were accomplished from dimethyl 3-chloromethylisoxazole-4,5-dicarboxylate by selective nucleophilic chemistry. For example, treatment of this trifunctionalized core with 3-bromobenzylamine and subsequent X-ray analysis identified the sole product as methyl 5-(3-bromobenzylcarbamoyl)-3-chloromethylisoxazole-4-carboxylate. Subjecting this amide/ester to thiophenol in the presence of 1 N NaOH completed the two-step transformation of this versatile starting material to the targeted 5-carbamoyl-3-sulfanylmethylisoxazole-4-carboxylic acid.

1,2,4,5-Tetrazines (prepared from aryl nitriles) condense with isoxazolylcyclobutanones (prepared from 3-benzenesulfonyl-3-vinylcyclobutanol) in methanolic KOH to give conformationally restricted 6-isoxazol-5-yl-6,7-dihydro-5H-[1,2]diazocin-4-ones. The solution 1H NMR spectra of dihydrodiazocinone 1a with phenyl moieties at C3 and C8 reveal two conformations of the eight-membered heterocycle that are non-interconverting on the NMR time scale at ambient temperature. The kinetics of the conversion process, followed by 1H NMR between 21 and 70 degrees C in DMSO solution, yield an activation energy of approximately 21 kcal/mol relative to the kinetic conformer and show an equilibrated ratio of approximately 5:1 of the thermodynamic to the kinetic conformers.

The preparation and X-ray crystal structures of (CyNC)Au(I)CN, (n-BuNC)Au(I)CN, and (i-PrNC)Au(I)CN.0.5CH(2)Cl(2) are reported and compared with those of (MeNC)Au(I)CN and (t-BuNC)Au(I)CN, which were previously described.

The unusual luminescence behavior of the two-coordinate gold(I) carbene complex, [Au[C(NHMe)(2)](2)](PF(6)) x 0.5(acetone), is reported. Upon freezing in a liquid N(2) bath, the colorless, nonluminescent solutions of [Au[C(NHMe)(2)](2)](PF(6)) x 0.

Crystals of {(Me(2)PhP)AuX}(n) (Me = methyl; Ph = phenyl; X = Cl, Br, I; n = 2, 3) show emission from two excited states. Both states are assigned a triplet multiplicity, on the basis of their lifetimes and zero-field splittings. The structured, higher energy emission originates at approximately 360 nm and has the greater relative intensity at low temperatures.

The structures of the series of two-coordinate gold(I) complexes {(Me(2)PhP)AuX}(n) where X is Cl, Br, or I have been examined by X-ray diffraction. The chloro complex crystallized in two separate polymorphic forms. Colorless hexagonal blocks of {(Me(2)PhP)AuCl}(3) crystallized in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/m with a = 12.
