Article Synopsis
  • In elderly hip fracture patients, preexisting anemia can worsen due to trauma and surgery, creating uncertainty around blood transfusion thresholds.
  • A study analyzed hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in 956 surgical patients with proximal femoral fractures to determine transfusion triggers and their impact on post-discharge mortality.
  • Results indicated higher transfusion rates and mortality among those with lower hemoglobin levels, suggesting a need for reevaluation of preoperative blood transfusion protocols, while cautioning that increasing thresholds might lead to higher mortality rates.
