Purpose: An association between the use of chlorhexidine in mechanically ventilated patients for the purpose of oral hygiene and the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) lacks conclusive evidence in the literature. Therefore, this study aims to assess the clinical impact of such practice. This evaluation will consider that retention factors, infection foci, and oral biofilm will be regularly removed by a dentist.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute respiratory distress syndrome is a significant complication in critical care patients. COVID-19 (C19)-associated severe respiratory failure is related to it, and d-dimer rise predicts a worse outcome. To investigate the association between d-dimer and the severity of this respiratory syndrome, we conducted a study in C19 intubated patients.

Background: The periparturient period in dairy cows is marked by immunosuppression which increases the likelihood of infectious disorders, particularly also mastitis. An in-depth understanding of peripartum leukocyte biology is vital for the implementation of highly successful post-partum disease prevention measures. Immune checkpoint molecules, such as programmed death 1 (PD-1) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4), are critical inhibitory receptors expressed on immune cells, particularly T cells, that drive immunosuppressive signaling pathways.

Objective: To analyze the literature and describe the evidence supporting osteobiologic use in revision anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery.
Methods: A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane library, and ClinicalTrials.
Lacrimal hyperalgesia is a rare type of periorbital neuralgia triggered by tear production. Two female patients in their mid-forties underwent orbital surgery and, several weeks following their procedures, developed pain when they produced tears. The symptom was described as a sharp, debilitating, and transient periocular pain.

Monocytes play a role in host defense against infection and represent the main source of inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOsteosarcoma is the most common primary bone malignancy. The prognosis of patients after local recurrence is generally poor and management of the locally recurrent disease is not well defined, especially in patients who have undergone limb-sparing surgery. A 20-year-old male presented a local recurrence of conventional osteosarcoma at the popliteal fossa with encasement of popliteal vascular bundle after previous tumor-wide resection and reconstruction with proximal tibia endoprosthesis.

Objective: The occurrence of partial remission (honeymoon phase) in type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been associated with a reduced risk of chronic microvascular complications of diabetes. We have published case reports showing that a combination therapy with the DPP-4 inhibitor sitagliptin plus vitamin D3 (VIDPP-4i) can prolong the honeymoon phase in patients with new-onset T1D. In the present case-control study, we investigated the frequency of occurrence of clinical remission (CR) in patients with new-onset T1D after VIDPP-4i treatment.

The correct positioning and alignment of the components significantly affects prosthesis survival. Considering the current controversy regarding the target of postoperative alignment of TKA, this study evaluated the tension at tibial component interface using two numerical methods.
View Article and Find Full Text PDF: diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is challenging, as no single test has absolute accuracy. The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of different simple synovial biomarkers in the diagnosis of PJI as defined by the European Bone and Joint Infection Society (EBJIS). : we retrospectively identified all patients undergoing revision hip or knee arthroplasty from 2013 to 2019 on our prospectively maintained database.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: Chronic shoulder dislocations are infrequent and can be easily overlooked unless a carefully clinical history, physical examination, and radiographic evaluation are undertaken. Bilateral simultaneous instability is almost pathognomonic for a convulsive disorder. To the best of our knowledge, we describe the first case of asymmetric bilateral chronic dislocation.

Thus, sperm selection methods and addition of motility-activating substances to sperm, such as caffeine, may improve sperm quality of equine frozen semen.

Purpose: To assess the clinical characteristics of tarsal buckling after ptosis correction and its management with margin rotation techniques.
Methods: Multicenter retrospective review of ten patients who developed upper eyelid entropion following ptosis correction. In all cases the tarsal deformity was corrected with margin rotational procedures with either a lid crease anterior approach or a traditional posterior approach.
Introduction: In 2019, Moufid and Gille published a study in which they proposed certain radiological parameters that may justify the mismatch between the lordosis of the lumbar segment and the lordosis of the rod bar using polyaxial screws. The aim of this study is to reproduce the measurements performed by Moufid and Gille and try to validate their findings.
Material And Methods: A retrospective study was performed including patients submitted to L3-L5 posterior fusion with or without interbody devices using polyaxial screws and titanium rods, for degenerative disease.
Aim: This study aims to describe the shoulder arthroplasty options for young and active patients (<60 years old) with glenohumeral osteoarthritis.
Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted by searching on Pubmed database. Studies that reported outcomes of patients with glenohumeral arthritis, younger than 60 years, that underwent shoulder arthroplasty [(Hemiarthroplasty (HA), Hemiarthroplasty with biological resurfacing (HABR), Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA), Reversed total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA)] were included.
Posterior wall fractures are the most common type of acetabular fractures. Treatment can be conservative or surgical. Operative treatment is indicated for acetabular fractures that result in hip joint instability and/or incongruity, as well injuries with incarceration of fragments of bone or soft tissue within the hip joint.

Background: Sleep bruxism (SB) is a condition regulated centrally, with a multifactorial etiology, which can occur secondary to systemic disorders and the use of certain medications.
Objective: The aim of this study was to identify associations between SB, obstructive sleep apnea, and hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and the use of antidepressants.
Material And Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 240 individuals underwent full-night polysomnography for medical reasons.

Purpose: To assess the effect of various lighting conditions and photograph exposures on perceived attractiveness.
Methods: In the first experiment, 5 variably exposed photographs were taken of 10 subjects using a consistent lighting condition (45° superior box light). In the second experiment, 10 subjects were photographed under variable lighting conditions with consistent exposure: 1) 90° overhead box light, 2) ring light, 3) 45° superior box light, 4) built-in camera flash, 5) 2 straight on box lights, each 45° from midline, and 6) natural light.
Autophagy is a critical metabolic process that supports homeostasis at a basal level and is dynamically regulated in response to various physiological and pathological processes. Autophagy has some etiologic implications that support certain pathological processes due to alterations in the lysosomal-degradative pathway. Some of the conditions related to autophagy play key roles in highly relevant human diseases, e.
