Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the quality of systematic reviews with meta-analyses (SRMAs) on clinical pharmacy services using the AMSTAR-2 tool, which assesses the validity of these reviews based on seven critical domains.
  • - Of the 153 SRMAs analyzed, 90.2% were classified as critically low quality, indicating significant issues in the overall quality of this research area, despite some slight improvements over time.
  • - The examination also revealed that altering the criticality of the AMSTAR-2 domains had no significant effect on the quality assessments, reinforcing the importance of adhering to all critical domains in pharmacy practice evaluations.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex connective tissue disease involving microvasculopathy, immune dysregulation, and extensive organ fibrosis. It affects various systems including the skin, lungs, heart, and gastrointestinal tract. Management is challenging due to the disease's heterogeneity and often requires more than just pharmacological treatment.

Our study investigated the innate immune response to infection by assessing microglial phenotypic changes and sickness behavior as inflammatory response markers post-ocular tachyzoite instillation. Disease progression in Swiss albino mice was compared with the previously documented outcomes in BALB/c mice using an identical ocular route and parasite burden (2 × 10 tachyzoites), with saline as the control. Contrary to expectations, the Swiss albino mice displayed rapid, lethal disease progression, marked by pronounced sickness behaviors and mortality within 11-12 days post-infection, while the survivors exhibited no apparent signs of infection.

The diagnosis of Moyamoya disease (MMD) relies heavily on imaging, which could benefit from standardized machine learning tools. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of deep learning (DL) algorithms for MMD by analyzing sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the curve (AUC) compared to expert consensus. We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for articles published from inception to February 2024.

Objective: We aim to investigate whether: 1) social skills (SS) are impaired in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); 2) SS would change over the course of treatment; and 3) severity of OCD, age of onset of OCD symptoms and illness duration would be associated with SS impairments.

Methods: 41 treatment-naive patients with OCD and 34 control participants (CP) were assessed using a SS inventory. Patients were reevaluated 12-weeks after standardized treatment.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of pregabalin and dexamethasone coadministration in preemptive analgesia and anxiety control in lower third molar surgery.

Materials And Methods: A triple-blind, split-mouth clinical trial conducted with patients divided into two groups: control group, receiving placebo and dexamethasone, and test group, receiving pregabalin and dexamethasone preoperatively. The evaluated variables were pain, measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), anxiety assessed through the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaires, hemodynamic parameters [Blood Pressure (BP), Heart Rate (HR), Oxygen Saturation (SpO)], and sedation assessed by the Ramsay scale.

Introduction: For patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) who are not suitable for surgical resection, neuromodulation with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an established approach. However, there is limited evidence of seizure reduction when replacing traditional VNS (tVNS) device with a cardiac-based one (cbVNS). This meta-analysis compares the seizure reduction achieved by replacing tVNS with cbVNS in a population with DRE.

Haemogregarine (Apicomplexa: Adeleorina) parasites are considered to be the most common and widespread haemoparasites in reptiles. The genus (Apicomplexa: Adeleorina: Hepatozoidae) can be found parasitizing a broad range of species and, in reptiles, they infect mainly peripheral blood erythrocytes. The present study detected and characterized a haemogregarine isolated from the lizard species, , collected from the municipality of Capanema, Pará state, north Brazil.

Introduction: Expert consensus operationalized treatment response and remission in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as a Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) reduction ≥35% and score ≤12 with ≤2 on Clinical Global Impressions Improvement (CGI-I) and Severity (CGI-S) scales, respectively. However, there has been scant empirical evidence supporting these definitions.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review and an individual participant data meta-analysis of randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) in adults with OCD to determine optimal Y-BOCS thresholds for response and remission.

Background: Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP) lacks identifiable anatomical pathology and effective pharmacological treatment. Alternative approaches in homeopathy, specifically clinical homeopathy, utilize ultra-diluted (potentized) biological products. In Brazil, standardized biotherapics from sheep tissues, particularly fifty-millesimal (LM) potencies of sheep , have shown promise in alleviating CNSLBP.

Background: When traditional therapies are unsuitable, revascularization becomes essential for managing posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) or vertebral artery aneurysms. Notably, the PICA-PICA bypass has emerged as a promising option, overshadowing the occipital artery-PICA (OA-PICA) bypass. The objective was to compare the safety and efficacy of OA-PICA and PICA-PICA bypasses.

Monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP) is pivotal in the management of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), but secondary brain injuries can arise despite normal ICP levels. Cerebral tissue oxygenation monitoring (PbtO2) may detect neuronal tissue infarction thresholds, enhancing neuroprotection. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of combined cerebral tissue oxygenation (PbtO2) and ICP compared to isolated ICP monitoring in patients with TBI.

Understanding the spatial pattern of a particular geographic phenomenon such as deforestation is a key issue to establish monitoring programs to prevent the depletion of natural resources. Thus, the goal of this study was to assess the spatial pattern of deforested areas in the Pardo and Jequitinhonha River basins using Ripley's K function. First, we mapped all deforested areas in these basins using Landsat multispectral imagery from 2007 to 2015.

Study Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological events associated with sleep bruxism (Sleep Bruxism [SB]; presence of mandibular movement activity) and the control window (4 minutes prior to SB event, where no mandibular movement activity was detected) in a polysomnography study in children with mild sleep apnea.

Methods: Polysomnography data from children aged 4 to 9 years old diagnosed with mild sleep apnea were analyzed by 2 trained examiners. The mandibular movement activity (bruxism event; SB) was classified into phasic and tonic.

Incidental durotomies are frequent complications of spine surgery associated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak-related symptoms. Management typically involves prolonged bed rest to reduce CSF pressure at the durotomy site. However, early ambulation may be a safer, effective alternative.

  • Two common ways to perform cerebral angiography are through the wrist (transradial) and the thigh (transfemoral), and there's no clear winner yet.!
  • A review of 18 studies with nearly 9,400 patients showed that both methods had similar success rates and times, but the wrist method had fewer complications.!
  • The results suggest that using the wrist method is better for patient safety, though the choice also depends on what the doctor prefers and is experienced with.!

Specific brain activation patterns during fear conditioning and the recall of previously extinguished fear responses have been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, further replication studies are necessary. We measured skin-conductance response and blood oxygenation level-dependent responses in unmedicated adult patients with OCD (n = 27) and healthy participants (n = 22) submitted to a two-day fear-conditioning experiment comprising fear conditioning, extinction (day 1) and extinction recall (day 2).
