The presence of antibiotics in the environment is of significant concern due to their adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. This study provides an assessment of potential ecological risks (RQ) associated with the concentrations of eight antibiotics and antiparasitics (amoxicillin-AMO, azithromycin-AZI, ciprofloxacine-CIP, ofloxacine-OFL, oxfendazole-OXF, lincomycin-LIN, sulfacetamide-SCE and sulfamethoxazole-SME) in the surface water of 13 urban lakes in Hanoi city, Vietnam during the period 2021-2023. Purpose: Our purpose is to develop a computer vision approach to quantify intra-arterial thickness on digital pathology images of kidney biopsies as a computational biomarker of arteriosclerosis.
Approach: The severity of the arteriosclerosis was scored (0 to 3) in 753 arteries from 33 trichrome-stained whole slide images (WSIs) of kidney biopsies, and the outer contours of the media, intima, and lumen were manually delineated by a renal pathologist. We then developed a multi-class deep learning (DL) framework for segmenting the different intra-arterial compartments (training dataset: 648 arteries from 24 WSIs; testing dataset: 105 arteries from 9 WSIs).
The creation of human liver models has long been a critical objective in academic, clinical, and pharmaceutical research, particularly for drug development, where accurate evaluation of hepatic metabolic dynamics is crucial. We have developed a bioengineered, perfused, organ-level human liver model that accurately replicates key liver functions, including metabolic activities, and protein synthesis, thus addressing some of the limitations associated with traditional liver monolayers, organoids, and matrix-embedded liver cells. Our approach utilizes liver-specific biomatrix scaffolds, prepared using an innovative protocol and fortified with matrix components that facilitate cellular interactions.
